Hi

Its my brothers 40th in a couple of weeks and I would like to buy him a gaming laptop.
He has a decent desktop pc and plays the following

New call of duty games
quakelive
Diablo 4

desktop spec
Processor AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 4.10 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB
Seagate Firecuda 520 ssd
Gfx Geforce rtx 2080 ti
Monitor Asus PG279QE

What laptop would he need to play these type of games
Budget £2000 (ish) Would this budget play games as good as his current setup ?

Thank you for any feedback

So you gave the PC to your brother??? https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/new-pc-but-unsure-of-monitor.67652/#post-467544

And now a laptop too. Have you got any room in your family for a dutiful vagrant? I'm happy on the couch, so long as I can plug in my music system. Asking for a friend?

Gaming laptops are far more expensive than desktops for equivalent power, and laptop hardware is not equivalent to desktops, so a laptop 4090 is more like a desktop 4080

Plus, nowadays, 1440p is the general resolution on laptops which means you need more powerful GPU's to be able to run them. Plus on a laptop you can't replace the GPU, so you fit the highest you possibly can which will increase the lifetime of the laptop.

For 1440p the LOWEST GPU you want to go is the RTX 4070, but you'd still have to adjust settings for most newer games at that configuration, you wouldn't just be able to set max everything.

That on a lower chassis than the top tier will cost £1900 exactly for a basic spec 15" Ionico.

That's the very lowest you want to go, but I wouldn't recommend that as it won't be long before the GPU is too weak for most games at 1440p.

Hi spyder
thanks for taking the time to reply

No i didnt give him mine :D we got 2 of those pc's in 2020 and they are still going strong now. I have one and so does he.
Feels like they have lasted very well and still play games great.

Use mine as office pc and play call of duty and diablo still

If I upped budget to 3k would that get something that will last a couple of years and not have to sacrifice game settings for games he currently plays?

Been extremely happy with my desktop from pcspecialist and the advice from here

Yes, absolutely, that's a much better budget for longevity for a laptop.

For 3k you could go for this with a top end GPU which will keep it performing for a lot longer at 1440p:
