Gone into building - advice on ultra-wides please!

My machine has just gone into building & im hoping for some advice on ultra wide monitors.
I’ll be mostly using it for streaming events (vmix) & editing video. Also will be giving pc gaming a go - having been a console chap for years. I’d be looking to use my MBP i9 as a second input occasionally.
I’ve looked at the g9 but read some bad reviews (clicking sounds, bad QC etc). Has anyone had any issues with this model? Or could you point me towards another one?

Check the dates on the reviews. The initial release was recalled due to multiple issues with the panel, it was then re released about 6 months later around November last year and everyone on the forum who has one sings their praises. It's not worth taking any notice of review before around that date as it's an entirely different panel. It's an incredible monitor. There's nothing else in the same league.

If you buy from Amazon or somewhere with good returns policy, then any issues, you just send it straight back and get a replacement. But any issues are faults, it's not how it should be.

But as I say, all the guys on the forum who have one are over the moon about it and haven't reported any issues like that.

The other possible contender is the AOC Agon but it’s a bit more of a budget (I use that word loosely, it’s still £900) superwide. Runs a max 120Hz compared to the potential 240Hz of the Samsung and just doesn’t look quite as ‘premium’.

If you’re going to do something, do it right. The G9 is calling you...

The G9 is an outstanding display, I'm yet to find any issues with it personally.

I do my day to day work on it currently (working from home and all that) and productivity wise its perfect for me, its essentially two monitors in one the way I use it which works well for me. There are other plug ins etc. you can get for windows which allow you to do a bit more (snap windows to the center and what not but I've not investigated those too much yet).

For gaming, its amazing, older games can be a bit weird sometimes, but nvidia experience is quite good at getting good resolutions working for most games in my experience and occasionally you need to tweak some settings (again, only really relevant for older titles) but once you've got things up and running it performs amazingly.

Initially there was some jiggery-pokery required to get the monitors running at 240Hz, but that is all done now and I would imagine any new monitors purchased should work out the box so you most likely won't have any issues. See this thread for my saga

I've mounted my G9 to the wall which was perfect for me, if you choose to wall or desk mount it, make sure you get a suitable mount as the monitor is heavy.

I've re-read your OP @AndHob - can't comment on the QC 'issues' my monitor came and was fine.. I'd reccomend buying from somewhere with a really solid returns policy (Amazon is good for example as far as my experience goes) to belay any fears in that regard. AS for the clicking, my monitor does click a bit but I dont really notice it - I have always put it down to the fact that when running in HDR mode it does get warm and well... plastic expands when its warm. Nothing I've found overly concerning or annoying personally.

So I guess by reputable I meant in terms of their returns policies - there are loads of reputable places to buy G9's from - just some will have more robust (arguably better for the consumer) returns policies/conditions than others.. I'm yet to find another etailer who has a superior returns policy to Amazon. Others may know of some though :)

Overclockers are usually very reliable. In fact I've still got hard drives from the early 00's from them still in use. I truly believe they thoroughly test their products and only sell higher rated stuff although I have no evidence to back this up.

Avoid Scan, they have a nightmare returns process, you have to pay all postage costs and it takes weeks to go through.

I would personally use Amazon though, every time.

Personally I always check the actual seller. If you're buying from Amazon you have nothing to worry about, but if you're buying from an Amazon Marketplace seller things might not be so straightforward. Amazon are good at chasing up marketplace sellers though.
