Good racing games?

I'm looking for some good racing games that don't use GFWL (can't get it working on win 8). I'm after a realistic closed track racing game with in-car view. I already play F1 and would've got Dirt 3 but it uses GFWL, is the original GRID any good? I used to play Forza 4 on my xbox before I sold my 360 off and loved it (the handling/modification & tuning) so I bought GT5 for my PS3 but it really shows its age (no sense of speed/weight and lousy handling/sfx). I would love to find another game for my PC preferably but I could settle with using my PS3 for it, I love complicated tuning and realistic feel/handling and just want to find another racing game that I can enjoy. I played need for speed (most wanted I think) on my friends playstation and it feels lazy and unrealistic, it's the sort of thing I want to avoid if possible but don't mind an open world if necessary (love playing TDU2). Any help is greatly appreciated.

How realistic do you want to go, there are games like Live for Speed which are very realistic simulators and therefore pretty difficult to master

Race 07 is pretty good and dirt cheap although not the most realistic in terms of handling, but still good fun to play

The more realistic the better really. By realistic I mean I don't want to be overtaken by someone doing outrun style drifting round corners when I'm braking/hitting the apex just right and still losing. And I don't want GRID 2 because it lacks an in-car view, the only way I play. Preferably I'd like the option to fiddle around with brake balance and gear ratios and stuff as well. Is NFS Shift/Shift 2 worth a try, it looks like a more serious racing game from EA or is it still quite arcadey?

If you want really realistic then something like Live for Speed would be your best bet, the controls and tweaking are much more realistic than anything you would find on Forza or Gran Turismo.

Thanks, the LFS site looks awesome.

Edit: Also can anyone recommend a slightly more casual one for local multiplayer with friends. Was thinking NFS Shift if it has local multiplayer.

I would go the other way to Wozza's remark about Race 07. Its a sim. Meaning the handling of eachvehicle is pretty spot on and the input needed to finish a race is pretty demanding at times but it still isnt as advanced as Gp4 which has all kinds of issues with wheels locking up on tight turns. So much to manage. But thanks for the Live for speed link. Im going to check that out. Part of Race 07 I love so much is it lets you do little things like manually drive into pits and garage including the winners paddock. Simple things I know but add to the experience.

Popular at our lan events is Blur.

Thanks for all these suggestions. Race 07 reminds me of the original FlatOut (possibly my favourite arcadey racer) but on asphalt & more realistic. I've already got the tech demo of BeamNG Drive and will pick up the full version when it's more than just a soft body physics game. I have F1 2012 and got it quite recently so I won't be buying F1 2013 for a while. LFS looks great and will be a fun challenge for me to tackle. I was thinking of picking up spintires, it looks so much fun.
