GPU cooking and clock speed down

Hi all,

Got a new machine from PCS as per spec below.

My GPU is idling at 70°c in performance mode. This drops to 50c if put into entertainment mode. As soon as it's under load, it hits 95°c+ and the clock speed comes right down to 210mhz.

Tell me this isn't right!? Game in question is Call of Duty Cold War. Doesn't matter if I run graphics at lowest or highest, the result is the same, with 10 - 15fps.

This laptop is only two weeks old, so can't quite believe I'm having this problem.

Have run nVidia driver update, so that's all good.

I assume the general opinion here would be that it goes straight back to PCS to sort out?

You've got optional updates waiting which are system drivers, windows isn't configured until they're installed, so you need to install those.

Also, while Steam is installing and downloading, it will run a far heavier load on the system than normal, as while it's downloading, it's also decrypting and extracting at the same time, believe it or not that's a really really heavy load on the system.

Got those downloading now and will feed back. Steam wasn't downloading at time of issue so will switch it off before trying again once optionals are installed. Thanks for the help so far. Will report back shortly!

I doubt this will improve things greatly, but the first thing to do is get windows fully configured.

The 11000 Intels do run extremely hot, although I don't think it should be this hot.

It may well be a bad paste job which is quite easily corrected.

Slight improvement - up a few FPS and the GPU clock rate does take a little longer to bomb, but does eventually bomb out to 210MHz after about 30 seconds. I'll get an RMA raised and return it for re-pasting/checking.

You can do the repasting yourself, takes about 30 mins and it's something you're going to have to do once a year as normal maintenance anyway.

It doesn't affect your warranty, PCS have an open chassis policy, and it's a given that the owner is expected to do it fairly frequently anyway.

I would recommend thermal grizzly kryonaut which you can find on amazon for about £15 for a large tube.

Yeah, I've done it a couple of times on my old MacBook. Think if this was older I'd do it myself, but given it's only 15 days old, I'll send it back, as that's pretty poor from PCS in the first place.

Wouldn't want to make a mess of re-pasting (I've only done it then once) and risk any damage.

Your help this evening is much appreciated!

Like I say, it's something you're going to have to be very comfortable doing as it will need to be done regularly on any performance laptop.

But if you're uncertain, then arrange an RMA, be aware, it will take up to a month due to how busy they are.
