GPU Issue on 5yr old Optimus system, do I repair or replace?

As per the title, the GPU has a fault in my Optimus series (not sure what model, purchased Jan 2015) and it is currently running on integrated graphics only.

It was returned to PC Specialist during Dec 2018 to understand the fault (prior to knowing it was GPU directly), and they quoted £245.00 to replace the GPU/Motherboard with the same components (no upgrade as such). It also needs a new battery (~£50-£60).

My question is, can I upgrade the system to a better GPU/Motherboard or am I constrained by the limitations of it being a Notebook?

At a cost of £300 to put the system back to normal working order, I am hesitant when that is 50% of the cost of newer systems with 1650/1660 GPUs.

The spec is as below:

Chassis and Display: Optimus Series 15.6" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
CPU: Intel Core i7 Quad Core i7-4710MQ (2.50GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM): 8GB Kingston SDIMM DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8Gb)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M - 2.0Gb DDR5, 640 CUDA Cores - DirectX 11
1st Hard Disk: 1TB SERIAL ATA ll 2.5" HARD DRIVE with 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm)
OS: Windows 10 Home Edition

It also has an integrated DVD writer, a high def sound card, USB 3.0 ports, integrated Wireless card, and an Optimus Series 8 battery (so I guess the system is Series 8?).

I have a work laptop so it is not used for anything other than leisure and gaming.

If anyone has any useful advice, I am all ears!

Thanks!

TBH I wouldn't spend £300 on a five year old laptop, even if you could upgrade the GPU. The RAM is DDR3 and and slow. You have a painfully slow 5400rpm HDD, so you're talking about another £100 for a SATA SSD. I don't think that chassis supports M.2 SSDs so the faster NVMe SSDs are not available to you at all.

I think you'll be spending close to £400 to bring that close to a current generation laptop so I'd save the pennies and look for a new one. :)
