GPU issue

Hi guys,

I took delivery of my new laptop last week (with an 850m GPU), and reinstalled Windows 8.1 on it. So far so good.
I downloaded all the PC Specialist drivers, and installed them all. Especially the nVidia Experience ones.
I downloaded Steam, and installed Rome II: Total War.

I launched the game, went to the graphics settings, and it only detects the Intel HD 4600.

I therefore read the sticky in this forum, and tried to use the nVidia control panel to fix the issue, but I click "Apply" it hangs for a while, and then forgets the settings.

There is a context menu addin which works fine for Minecraft (so the GPU is there and working [it even makes Minecraft look glorious]), but doesn't work for Steam or Steam games (it just doesn't use the GPU).

I have tried:
  • Reinstalling all nVidia software
  • Reinstalling all Intel drivers
  • Adding a custom global setting
  • Adding a custom applicating setting
  • Disabling the integrated graphics
  • Launching through Steam
  • Navigating to the exe and running from there.
  • nVidia Inspector

and nothing has worked. As I see it, there are three things left to try:

  1. Some driver I don't know about
  2. Some BIOS setting I don't know about (the BIOS on the laptop is the old, non-mouse friendly version. This there a way to get a Sandy bridge+ one?)
  3. Reinstalling Windows

I'm hoping it's 1, but I don't mind 2. I don't think 3 will fix it, if I'm honest. I'm tempted to reinstall Windows 7, but my Windows 7 is upgrade only, so it's a massive faff and I'd rather be on the lastest version.

Any help massively appreciated. I'm going nuts!

Have you got all the settings on high performance rather than power saving? the only things I can think of are to either, change your global settings to select gpu when playing games, adjust them to gpu on individual games, or right click the game itself (shortcut) and press play with high performance gpu. Thats all i can think of.
