Green screen crash to restart

Hi Folks,

I got my first pre-build pc about 2 months ago and there are times when playing games where the screen will turn green with a dead tone for about 5 seconds then reset. One time it happened with the green screen but I could still hear the game in the background, talk to friends over discord, so I had to hold the power button myself to restart it.

I contacted PC specialist over a month ago who advised me to remove the graphics card and put it back in to check no wires had came loose in transit and this seemed to work....but now the green screen is happening again and it only ever happens when playing a game.

I have looked online and I see other people talking about it this, how it may be a windows 10 problem and possible solutions but it is impossible for me to try understand what they are suggesting to do due to lack of PC knowledge and experience.

I have the same amount of PC knowledge as a new born child would have so If I need to provide any further info (and it isn't very obvious where to get this info) please advise me as to where I can find it.

My processor - AMD Ryzen 3 3100 4-core Processor

Absolutely any help at all would be greatly appreciated as i'm freaking out about this.

Does this happen in ANY game or on with ONE PARTICULAR game? If so, which one?

Have you run Windows Update recently? If not please run Windows Update until no more updates are found.

Is has happened on several games.

Xbox game pass - Halo MCC
Forza horizon 2

Steam game - Noita

Could you advise how to run windows update? 😀

If you click here it will take you to some basic information on how to run the updates.

If you click on the 'Check for Windows Updates' it will open your 'Settings' for you. Main thing is to make sure that all updates have been run and your PC restarted as and when required as some updates will require a restart (especially if you have 'Fast Start' enabled) to install properly.

Click on the 'window' icon at bottom left, then click the gear-wheel (Settings) icon. When the settings window opens, click the Update & Security item (it's the last one). When the Update & Security window opens click the Check For Updates button.

If there are any available updates they will be downloaded and installed, don't switch off your PC whilst this is going on. Once all updates have been installed click Check For Updates again to see whether there are any updates for the updates you just applied (it happens). :)

Okay so yeah, I done this yesterday and there was an update, tried again this morning and again another update for defender which I have installed.

Ok.

I know there are some issues with drivers on some AMD graphics cards, @SpyderTracks knows more about that than I do though. I would check for an updated driver for your graphics card on the AMD site.

Okay so on the website, under AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT drivers & support, it gives me the options below. When I run auto detect and install, it suggest Adrenalin 2020 edition. Do I NEED to download one of these? what have I got right now? I have no problem installing one, just unsure as to why I'm doing it. Just a bit confused. Thanks.

The reason you're doing this is because your problems only happen in games, which tends to point at the graphics card (they do all of the graphics heavy lifting in games) and because there are known problems with some AMD graphics drivers.

You're thus ensuring that you have the very latest driver installed for your graphics card (which should have all the latest bug fixes in it). Graphic drivers change quite often, so it's not unusual to find that the Windows update libraries don't have the very latest version and you have to install it manually.

I would download the first two drivers, the recommended (WHQL) 20.4.2 version and the 20.9.1 optional version. The stable driver should be the 20.4.2 (WHQL) version - the WHQL means it's passed Windows Hardware Quality Lab testing. This is probably the version installed by Windows Update but I would install this one and test the system. If you still get issues then I would try the newest driver, the 20.9.1 version.

When installing graphics drivers it's very important to fully uninstall any earlier versions first, so download DDU and use that to uninstall all graphics drivers and then reboot. Then install the 20.4.2 driver and test the system to see whether the crashes have stopped. If not, then use DDU again to remove all traces of that graphics driver and reboot. Then install the 20.9.1 driver and test the system to see whether the crashes have stopped.

Okay so I tried to use some initiative before getting your message and I went to the AMD site and ran the "auto detect and install graphics driver for windows which was the adrenalin 2020 edition. I then went onto the AMD app and seen that there was an available download under
driver and software which I downloaded and required a restart to install

If still required could you advise how I would identify my old driver and delete it? Thanks.

Before going any further, you've just made some changes so it's important now to test to see whether those changes have fixed your issue. So play your games, try to make it crash again.

If it does crash then download DDU as I suggested and run that. It's fairly self-explanatory, you just need to make sure it's set to the correct graphics card and then click the Clean & Restart button. ONce it restarts you can install the newly downloaded driver (whichever version you decide to use).

Okay so I will continue to use the PC as normal until (hopefully not) the crash happens.

Could you advise where I download DDU, is this just something I type into google to find?

Apologies if these are really rookie questions :)

So sadly it has happened again so going to go ahead with downloading DDU.

Do I need to uninstall anything at all before downloading the option below for me on the link. (united Kingdom)

And once this is done will I just go to the AMD website again to pick the driver

Could you advise?

Thanks

Personally I would download DDU from the original vendor's website here: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3282 - the download link is at the bottom.

You don't need to install/uninstall anything else, DDU is a stand-alone product.

I would download the AMD driver(s) before you run DDU, I just like to have everything ready before I start uninstalling stuff. Once DDU restarts the system install the downloaded driver.

:)

Hi folks,

I was having issues with my PC fans not spinning up while gaming and this was causing my pc to green screen crash. This was happening for about 2 months so I was sent a replacement graphics card and that night with the new graphics card installed, the fans were starting up while gaming, roughly every 2 minutes for about 30 seconds.

This had now started happening even while not playing any games.

I tthought his was odd so I phoned PC spec and they suggested to DDU and install the most recent drivers from the AMD website which i have done.

I have tried playing a game today and again the fans are not starting at all so im worried this might cause the pc to green screen crash again.

I know literally nothing about PC's so any advise about if the fans should be starting up right away or any tips would be greatly appreciated.
