what is the advantage of having solid state drive say40gb,as opposed to a 1TB WD CAVIAR GREEN WD10EARS, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE,then making a partition on the 1tb drive for the os?

Well think of a SSD as a jumbo sized flash drive. They're alot faster than HDD's due to the fact they're not mechanical so data can be read / written virtually instantly..., Another thing due to the nature of SSD's I don't think they encounter fragmentation. Also you don't need to partition a HDD if you don't want to.
