Have I configured my new PC the best way I can?

Hi guys,

I'm very excited to be getting myself this new PC, but first I wanted to ask for some feedback about the build I've configured. This way I'll be happier in the knowledge I'm getting exactly what I want. Assume I've got slightly old knowledge of PC hardware (last time I bought parts and built a PC, it was 2010), and please share your thoughts with me! I'm a gamer nerd that wants to have the best quality experience with super fast speeds. I'd love to know if there's any glaringly obvious mistakes I've made, if anything could be different to make it look even more awesome and tidy, if I've configured the SSD drives correctly, etc. I'm also not sure if this will include the awesome water connected fans. Does that come standard, or do I need to add that?

Thanks so much for your help! Here's the specs:

That’s not a gaming platform and wouldn’t perform very well at all, and closed loop watercooling is rarely a good idea these days unless it’s for data science or something similar, for gaming there’s zero benefit.

AMD are far superior processors these days also.

what monitor are you pairing it with, what resolution and refresh rate or make and modelif you’re unsure?

Hi @SpyderTracks! Thanks very much for your fast response. I'm curious to find out more what you think.

If I'm honest, I also love the whole aesthetic of the water-cooled system shown in the picture for that case. I appreciate that it may not provide any benefit at all, but for me, it looks awesome. But, I'm open to ideas. Is there any considerable downside(s) of having the water-cooling system?

And to answer your question - I have a single 27inch monitor 1440p @144Hz, and will get one more of these once I have the new PC and desk to suit.

Many thanks guys for your thoughts @SpyderTracks & @Nursemorph!

I'm thinking now that there's better ways to make the PC look good - without the cost and maintenance. I also realise now that the AMD processors are better.

Here's my new re-thought specs, what do you think? Note I wanted to pick the 3600MHz RAM, but couldn't. The message was telling me "The motherboard you have selected cannot support higher than 2666MHz memory with the 3990X processor". But, I didn't choose the 3990X processor. So, I'm a little confused there. Regarding the CPU cooling - I've chosen the closed loop CoolerMaster one. Is there any maintenance involved in this one since it uses liquid cooling?

Again, that's not a gaming PC, you're on the wrong configurator.

Don't get stuck thinking that BIGGER IS BETTER, MORE MONEY = GOOD, that's not how computers work, you taylor the PC to meet the requirements. That platform is not designed for gaming, and you'd do a lot better on a gaming platform. The reality is that platform would give worse performance than a gaming platform, and most of the other stuff just wouldn't be used as you're only pairing with a 1440p 144Hz screen which would be a bottleneck.

This would be better suited:

Case

Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2080 SUPER - HDMI, 3x DP GeForce - RTX VR Ready! More than enough for your monitor
1st Storage Drive
3TB SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE You won't benefit from an SSD as the storage drive
1st M.2 SSD Drive

Thanks @SpyderTracks, that looks good to me. I'm gonna make some small tweaks and share the specs soon. Just wondering why you picked a 3TB HDD and a 1TB SSD? What would the 3TB be used for? Thanks!

Good morning guys!

Re-configuring the build @SpyderTracks created now. Have a question - is it better to go with 2 x 16GB RAM, or 4 x 8GB RAM? I've read that 2 x 16GB would be better since motherboard is dual channel.

It is always better to go with 2 rather than 4 as CPUs prefer it, apparently...don't ask me why as I have no clue but that's what the experts on here have said in the past. Also, 2 sticks rather than 4 means 2 less to go wrong!
And leaves you space to add more in the future.

Here's the updated specs. I realise it may have some OTT specs, but I'm happy to spend a bit more to be well future proofed. What do you think?

You're not going to future proof anything by making increased choices across the CPU, RAM or the GPU. You really want to buy what you need and pocket the savings to then upgrade the GPU/CPU in a year or 2, if that's what you choose to do.

For the GPU, the 2070 Super is overkill for 1440p 144hz gaming, the 2080 Super is huge overkill but you have the budget with ease. The 2080 Ti is just wasteful, there's absolutely zero point for going down this route so I would strongly suggest you re-think here.

I'm just about to pop onto your configurator and go with what I would do with your budget. I'm not shy at spending money on aesthetics and performance so this will be an EXTREMELY luxurious build that is a little wasteful on cash but has you more than covered for every aspect of what you could want to do in the future.

As said previously, just because it’s more expensive doesn’t mean it’s better, components for specific use cases. Most of these upgrades will have zero impact on performance now or for the life of the machine. Just wasting money.

The case is as good looking as it gets. Seriously stunning and the RGB is all controlled via the same software so it's all synced.

CPU is overkill but gives some extra frequency and will demolish anything you throw at it.
Motherboard is the go-to for this chipset IMO
16GB of RAM has you more than covered for anything you wish to do. If the system lasts the test of time you can add another 2x8GB sticks at any point. 32GB is a waste.
2080 Super is HUGE overkill for 1440p. You may want to look at 1440p Superwide though, which is where this system would REALLY shine.
500GB of storage for OS & Programs, 1TB of storage for games, 3TB of storage for non-current games & documents etc.
750W RMx PSU, should see you ok for 10years + no matter which upgrades you choose
H115i Platinum as it's only £6 more than the H100i and is more effective.
Wifi - has you covered
Additional RGB lighting to really make the case pop

I would seriously consider a ultrawide monitor as your new gaming monitor. It would make SUCH a difference to your experience. If you go down this route, you can make a case for the 2080 Ti, but with your budget I would actually splurge on the STRIX so that you know exactly what you are getting.

My question is about the Gen 4 drives....is there a particular reason you have chosen 2 of them? One of them will be for the operating system and applications etc and the SATA will be for storage so not sure what purpose the second one serves?

Both my laptop and my desktop have dual M2 drives. It makes a HUGE difference to the ease of re-formatting the OS while leaving all the games intact :D

My guess is that will be the OPs thinking too.

Anyone got a spare £2.5k down the back of the sofa?? Would love to buy this system :D

Tell me about it. I would actually be gutted to have this in my cupboard (where my current system resides) as it's just far too pretty not to have on show haha.

Fair enough....I deleted that post when I saw you recommended a spec with 2 of them so figured my question was redundant

It's very much a luxury rather than anything else to be fair, so it is a fair comment.

It's been my approach for years so when the budget allows, which it definitely does in this case, it's a good choice.

I would actually have gone with the 2TB drive for this system but it's out of stock.
