Help with a new PC build

Hey guys. Planning to get a new desktop for gaming purposes and seeing as my friend got one from this site recently, I wanted some advice on the build he bought and if anything is worth upgrading e.g. CPU/GPU/Graphics card/Space. I currently use a ps4 connected to my TV and haven’t been PC focused for about 9 years.
I’ll be using it for MMO’s (), indie games and some single players if I can. My budget is around £1800 keeping in mind I’ll need a monitor as well, although I’ll be getting that a little later so wouldn’t mind some recommendations and things to look out for e.g. refresh rate etc.
This is the build my friend got and can post the URL to the thread:

Some of this hardware has been superseded by newer versions.

Is that ~£1800 including the monitor?

If you have a separate budget for the monitor, how much is that and when roughly do you intend to buy it?

That matters in terms of trying to balance the PC components with the monitor so that they fit well together.

£1800 approx. for the PC alone but could spend a bit more if needed. I'm looking to buy the monitor around 2/3 weeks later for £200/250. Not exactly sure about prices so wanted some good recommendations.

I'm not really sure it's worth buying a spec along the lines of the above with a 2080 (now "2080 Super") for a £200 monitor.

Rather, rebalance a little away from the GPU to get a better monitor. And there are more cost-effective SSDs.

An RTX 2070 Super is much closer in price to the old RTX 2070 but closes the gap down with the RTX 2080 quite well:

The best spec you're going to get for ~£200-250 for the monitor is 1080p 144hz. And as you can see either the RTX 2070 Super / RTX 2080 / RTX 2080 Super are all overkill. They all give more than satisfactory performance.

The RTX 2070 Super being £200 less expensive means you now have £450-550 or so for your monitor. Which opens up 1440p 144hz, freesync / gsync / gsync compatible. And even at this higher resolution, it can still pull ~100fps in Witcher 3.

You'll also likely want one of the new Ryzen 3000 CPUs, the R5 3600 being excellent.

Plus something like the Dell S2716DG or the Gigabyte AORUS AD27QD

I'm personally looking forward to the LG 27GL850 due out very soon.

Agree with the GPU and CPU. Why judge the framerate you get from a GPU by using The Witcher? (Just curious)
Any advice on cases (I'm a bit of a show off and besides the great tech inside I'd like the outside to look cool as well)
When is the new LG monitor supposed to come out?
Anything else to add?

Popular and demanding title I guess. But not a monster like AC:OD. Which gets benched on ultra by reviewers even if you'd never really play it at ultra because of how it canes performance on even beastly GPUs.

I linked the review so you can check out some other titles.

The 570X you mentioned in your post is a good case. As is the cheaper 460x. The H500P is best avoided versus alternatives.

August sometime is what I heard. There is another UK PC component and system seller with it available for pre-order.

One should never pre-order before reviews of course, but Linus got his hands on one and give it a positive verdict:

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help and I'll be ordering my PC today and hope it comes in time for me to game. Quick question: is there any point in getting the Ryzen 7 processors and roughly what's the longevity of my build so I know when I need to upgrade my parts.

For gaming, the R7 3700x isn't worth it at all.

For anything at all, the R7 3800x isn't worth it and should be avoided like the plague :) It would barely be worth it over a 3700x if they gave it away as a free upgrade

As for longevity, that depends on future games, and ultimately what you find you're happy with in terms of settings and framerates.
But, especially with a monitor that has adaptive sync, and a 2070 Super at 1440p, you should be good for a while.

The best way to futureproof is often to not overspend now, and keep the cash back for future upgrades. Why spend £150 more on a CPU that gives no real advantage in games today, and that by the time it does give an advantage will be obsolete anyway. etc.

The R5 is a sweet spot and the 2070 Super is great for 1440p.

Hi again, thought I'd repost on this thread so I don't repeat info somewhere else. Bought the PC a week ago and ordered the lg monitor same time. Monitor is still on preorder and getting a little tired of it connected to my TV. I was thinking of cancelling my pre order and buying a different monitor I can (hopefully) get sooner or just wait?

"buy now or wait" is probably the most FAQ in PC gaming.

You could wait, there must be some models shipping as I saw a place that has it on pre-order suddenly get a customer review so someone seems to have got one. You could phone that store and ask if they have an ETA.

otherwise for alternatives, I would look at the Gigabyte AORUS monitor (I don't have the mode number to hand but there's only one of them!)

Hope the PC is otherwise all well :)
