Advice on spec

Hi,

I'd appreciate any feedback on this spec. budget is around 3k. I tried to follow the Desktop Building Guide which was really helpful so hopefully I haven't got it too far off.

I'll be using it for work, gaming and some photo and audio editing.

I currently have 3 iiyama XUB2792UHSU-B1 monitors which I'll probably look at upgrading in a few months - so any advice on those would be welcome.

One question I have is when trying to configure this it wouldn't let me choose 64gb Corsair VENGENCE DDR5 6000MHz (4x16GB) (or the 2x32GB) memory - I got this when clicking proceed "The memory configuration that you have selected is not currently compatible with ASUS motherboards. Please amend to a Gigabyte motherboard or amend your memory choice." but it looks like that motherboard should support that memory. Is it worth trying to get the faster memory?

Hi Andy. Sorry no one replied. I'd guess it's because you have a slightly tricky set of needs. First, those displays are not gaming displays: they're 60Hz 4K ones, great for creative purposes but not ideal at all for gaming. I'd suggest using something 1440p 144Hz or better for gaming, and then having perhaps two of your existing monitors for work purposes. That would be the ideal way to do it IMO.

Then with the setup... Do you need maximum CPU multicore grunt? Nothing you've described sounds like it needs 16 cores and huge multicore power (unless your audio editing is extreme). I'd suggest you would be fine with the 7800X3D, rather than the expensive and less efficient 7950X3D. And with the RAM, are you sure you need 64GB? If you don't, then 32GB of faster RAM will perform much better. (Conversely, if you do need them RAM, then 64GB of slower RAM would be better.)

As to why you can't buy the 64GB of RAM with the Asus motherboard at 6000MHz, it's a fair question. Clearly PCS aren't happy stocking it; there have been problems with it historically, so perhaps they aren't satisfied with its stability still...

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yeah monitors were bought a while back without much thought about gaming - great suggestion to add a new one for gaming and keep using 2 of the others - I'll start looking into that.

Probably don't need the 7950X3D tbh and it looks like the 7800X3D is better value and will be more than enough.

I use some software that eats up memory and I often have a lot of stuff running so I wanted to up what I've been using (32GB). When you say 64GB of slower RAM do you mean the 4800MHz? I'll stay away from the 6000MHz if there's any chance of stability issues.

Sounds like 64GB is the best bet, then. I'd go for the fastest RAM you can get; if we're sticking with an Asus board, that'll be 2x32GB of 5600MHz memory.

Here's where I'd be inclined to go:

Case
CORSAIR 5000D AIRFLOW TEMPERED GLASS GAMING CASE Case with much better airflow and therefore cooling
Processor (CPU)

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Eight Core CPU (4.2GHz-5.0GHz/104MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5)
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI (AM5, DDR5, PCIe 4.0, Wi-Fi 6) Alternatively change to Gigabyte for the extra memory speed
Memory (RAM)

64GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 5600MHz (2 x 32GB) AMD
Graphics Card
20GB AMD RADEON™ RX 7900 XT - HDMI, DP - DX® 12
Graphics Card Support Bracket
NONE (BRACKET INCLUDED AS STANDARD ON 4070 Ti / RX 7700 XT AND ABOVE)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 4700MB/sW) Boot drive
1st M.2 SSD Drive

4TB CORSAIR MP600 PRO NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (up to 7000 MB/R, 6850 MB/W) Main storage drive
1st Storage Drive

16TB SEAGATE IRONWOLF PRO 3.5", 7200 RPM 256MB CACHE I'm a bit nervous of a massive hard drive, but hopefully you have a good backup solution
Power Supply

CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ - MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)

CORSAIR iCUE H100i ELITE CAPELLIX XT RGB High Performance CPU Cooler A better cooler

Ok thanks for putting that together. I had considered the CORSAIR 5000D based on other posts but went for the FRACTAL DEFINE 7 as it was meant to be quiet but it makes sense to go for a case with better airflow and cooling - and the 5000D does look very nice.

I've made a small change to the SSD boot drive just to give myself a bit more space - I'm hoping it won't cause any problems. I've also reduced the HDD to 10TB which is going to be more than enough - it's too easy to keep increasing the size for only a few £s and thinking it's not that much more for another 2TBs - I'm sure my backup up solution is fine until I actually need to use it :)

Here's (hopefully) the final spec... I did have a play around with changing the Asus board for a Gigabyte one with 6000MHz RAM. Price wise wasn't much of an increase and I'm not sure if I'd get much benefit from the faster memory and the Asus TUF boards seem to be well regarded but happy to switch to Gigabyte if it's worth it.
