Hello there :)

Not my first post... My bad...

Anyway, I thought I'd pop in to say "hi"

Not sure how active I will be here. I'm no stranger to forums but places like this tend to be more for tech support stuff, you know, when something goes wrong.

A bit about me:-

I'm a 1960 kid, so 59 this year.

I have had computers since the release of the C64 back in the 80's

Later that was followed up by an Amiga 500.

Then in the mid 90's I had my first PC built by DABS (remember them?)

In the early 00's I built my own PC which was to be my music production workstation. Spec wasn't bad at the time and I still have it, although it takes an age to power up XP.

In 2012 I decided to go down the laptop route and I purchased a CLEVO based thing from pcspecialist. It was a decent spec, though not the absolute latest CPU. But lately I was getting a bit fed up with its lack of processing power so I thought I'd go back down the desktop path.

I also have a Surface Pro that I bought from PC world. I love that thing... A true "laptop." Don't get me wrong, I love my CLEVO but it weighs a tonne!

So, my desktop is based on an i9 CPU with 32gb RAM, a 500GB NVMe OS drive and a 1TB QVO (would have preferred a PRO but the price was taking me over my overall budget).

Loving it so far... I've gone all RGB, which surprised me really. It just kind of happened.

Nice big full tower Dark Base 900 Pro Black.

Big dock off Noctua cooler.

Looks pretty cool :)

For graphics I had to go outside of PCS because I wanted the ROG STRIX GTX 1050Ti because of its claimed 0dB operation.

Played DOOM for the first time the other night, my fave FPS, and loved it. Had to make many compromises when playing it on the CLEVO, but not any more...

Right, that's it for now... Tea time... Don't want to miss Pointless!

cheers

Hello Andy and welcome to the fora! :)

59 years old? You're nowt but a lad! One or two of us on here are significantly older than that... :wheelchair:

Just one thing, links to personal websites are not allowed on these fora I'm afraid. It would be better for you to modify your sig than have one of us mods do it. :)

Welcome to the fora.

Hope I was not breaking the rules looking at your sites :) As someone who has a very wide taste in music, which includes stuff like Tangerine Dream, the quick listen I had sounded OK, will have to have a proper listen when I have time.

Not sure if you have ever worked with Ardour but it is cross platform and free: https://ardour.org/

Hiya Stephen,

Thanks for checking out my links before I deleted them... My bad haha! I truly didn't realise and I should have checked out the rules first. Of course, it is standard procedure to do that at what ever forum I join, although I am not a member of many to be honest, and I hate spam myself so I do understand. I hate it when people fly into a forum, leave a few links and then never get involved in the overall community.

I do a lot of drone stuff at the moment so definitely a niche product. I also have a modest modular system so that tends to get a bit more bleepy. Great for really strange sounds that haha!

Regarding Ardour. Yes, I am familiar with that package. I had an Ubuntu setup, ever so briefly. It was great for general e-mail and web browsing but, at the time, Ubuntu was poorly supported from a music creation point of view so I went back to Windows.

Ardour really is coming along nicely, though. And as you say, it is free.

In the past I was an ardent SONAR (by Cakewalk) fan but that package when to the wall a year or so ago and I jumped onto Studio One and also REAPER. Currently settled on REAPER, which is not free but at only something like £50, depending on the exchange rate, it's a great DAW.

cheers, and thanks for popping in :)

Ubuntu Studio is very good these days and there are a few other Studio Linux distros, all with low latency kernels, you can find them via this site: https://distrowatch.com/

Thanks for the link, Stephen. Yes, definitely worth keeping an eye on Linux based developments. The reason I went to Ubuntu in the first place is my laptop at the time was Windows XP and it was grinding to a halt. Installing Ubuntu gave it a new lease of life... Very efficient...
