I've just spent half a day trying to resolve a problem with my Blackberry. It would load up with a white screen saying "app error 523". I tried checking for updates for OS using the Blackberry Desktop program, but it wouldn't allow me to do anything. After a bit of a 'google' I found a program called "Blackberry Swiss Army Knife" (BBSAK). I downloaded this program and it allowed me to uninstall the defunct OS on my Blackberry. I then went back to BB Desktop program and reinstalled the latest OS. Hey presto, all is now good!
Some of you may encounter this problem, so hope it helps.

NOTE: In the Youtube video at around 1:50 it tells you to delete a file called "vendor.xml" I deleted this as instructed (mine was just named "vendor") and have had no problems. You might want to try it without deleting the file.
