How's this? Help most appreciated

Hi folks,

I need a decent laptop for web development, photo editing, video editing and graphic design. I ordered a Macbook Pro (spit!) but the network card is faulty and I'd been thinking I should get something with a bit more flexibilit in case I wanted to play the occasional game, and which offered more upward potential. The macbook pro 16 was £1999 inc vat, so that's my absolute max budget but any money saved is a good thing.

How does this spec look, and what's the shelf life? both in terms of gaming and also the professional uses above?

We love you Ukraine
It's a decent build, but I wouldn't choose that drive, an M2 SSD would be far better, better speeds and longevity.

It's hard to say how long it will last, but for gaming, the 2070 Max Q would probably last 4 years or so.

I could be wrong myself but I think you're misreading it? 1TB Intel® H10 NVMe seems decent to me. What I find strange is why would you need a 32GB Optane drive when you are already running a NVME surely that would be more suitable for a mechanical drive?

That's what I'm saying. @peteroc30 Selected a NVMe drive.

@SpyderTracks said he wouldn't choose that drive...Was just wondering what the reason was? 😀

It's very limited in speed capacity, the up-to speed relies heavily on the Optane module and thus is limited in extended read/write processes. It was, IMO, doomed to fail from the start and was effectively a failed experiment. Intel have known sustained write problems along with general poor life.

The 970 blows it out the water in every area and it's cheaper.

Thanks guys, I will change to the Samsung drive, it was preselected on something else I looked at so assumed it was top option.

Am I daft going for 32gb ram, will it be utilised? Or should I go to 16?

Depending on the level of photo/video editing it could come in very handy. As it's within budget I think it's fair to leave it in, that way you don't need to consider it as a bottleneck.

Gotcha, still seems better than a standard SSD though to me. 👍

Thank you, I will keep the 32gb

Whats the screen like, I cant find any reviews about panel quality and whether it's IPS etc, and just how matte it is.

Obviously macbook pros have an amazing screen, I'm just hopeful this one will be satisfactory?

Sorry for all the questions it's just a big amount to commit.
