The Intel integrated graphics is the primary graphics and is used for general use to economise on battery life. The NVidia card will only be used if the occasion warrants it. Normally a program (perhaps a game) will define when it wants to use the NVidia card and the settings to use.

Which graphics to use and the settings can be changed in the NVidia Control Panel/ Manage 3D Settings.

Hello sparkycat, as dogbot says the Intel integrated graphics is the primary graphics and cannot be turned off. Use nvidia control panel to set the settings. We suggest set the performance mode to MAX when plugged in. This normally will use the high end GPU when you are using mains and the intel when you only have battery power.
