IPS Light Bleed - Your Experience?

Hi All,

So, I received my first ever IPS laptop the other day. Sadly I noticed light bleed during dark screens or simply around the edge during typical use.

My chassis was a Clevo*W350STQ (Optimus VII). The colour was very good and viewing angles were great. The display was massively let down however by the yellowish light from the bottom right, top left and bottom middle. This light creeped onto the display by perhaps 3 inches in each instance.

Some say minor light bleed may be acceptable as part of IPS technology, but I disagree with this as I've seen IPS laptop displays with little to no light bleed whatsoever. ..

I was wondering how other people have faired with IPS panels, particularly from the Clevo range. Input from the community here will help me decide on whether it's possible to obtain an acceptable Clevo display from PCS or perhaps ask for a refund or exchange for a comparable laptop and display which I can accept.

My laptop is being returned next week.

mine has something similar, bottom right and whole left side bleeds quite a bit. Resolved by slight pressure on the backside at those places. Can't easily send the laptop back sadly.

IPS panels have two common ailments. One is glow, the other is light bleed. Glow manifests as light patches in the corners and shifts with angle and/or distance. Light bleed is a defect where light blooms into the display from points around the frame and is unaffected by viewing angle/distance. Just Google both and you'll find lots of images. Premium laptops have little to no light bleed, this is perhaps best seen in the Apple products - although they have been known to suffer also. My brother recently purchased a Macbook Pro, it has an IPS panel with no light bleed/glow whatsoever. Impressive!
