Laptop advice

Hello everyone, during these days I am thinking about changing my current laptop (specs in signature) which to be fair is still performing very well, so I am very satisfied with the purchase I did with Pcspecialist during mid-2019.

I am using the laptop in my signature. When I bought it I was planning to use it as a jolly and to play games with a fixed pc later on like I always did, so I did not go heavy on the video card.

However I ended up sticking with the laptop only. This is because I am 3 to 4 weeks per year out of England and when I have guests I bring the laptop in my bedroom where I could not use a fixed PC because there is no space for a desk.

When I use the laptop in my living room (most of the times) I have connected it with a 4k display, keyboard and satellites, so basically I am using it as if it was a fixed pc but with the limits of a laptop.

I use my Lenovo L28u-30 28 inches with a 4k resolution (great for productivity/internet) but I set the games resolution from within the game (not from windows) to 1080p. The laptop lid instead is always closed, so I would like to stick with a 15.6 inches laptop.

Looking at the laptops available I see lots of them have a 3.2USB type C port. Instead I have a minidisplay port on the back of mine, which I have connected to the monitor with a miniplay port to display port which allows me to always have 60 FPS (if I use an HDMI cable instead the FPS drops immediately to 30).

I cannot complain as I bought this monitor on a good offer, but do other more expensive 4k monitor do the same? (using the HDMI the FPS drops to 30) - as not now but in the future I might change monitor as well.

If I buy a USB C(Thunderbolt 3) to DisplayPort 4K cable do you think I will potentially be able to play games on 60Hz with the new laptop? Essentially I do not want to use the HDMI cable as it drops the FPS to 30 (or to change everytime the main resolution form 4k to 1080p), but ideally I would like to keep the monitor I got (or if it would be better to change it I would like to plan everything in advance).

I am trying to understand this aspect first as I am trying to figure out what I need to do to have a nice upgrade and how much budget should I factor in.

So I am basically gathering the ideas before deciding. I was thinking to dedicate a budget of £1500 to £1700 and I definitely would like to upgrade this year.

I got interested in upgrading when the new intel 12th gen came out and I see at the moment that there is the 15.6 inches ELIMINA with the new intel 12th gen processor and an Nvidia 3060.

The thing I do not like is Nvidia only fitted the 3060 with 6 GDDR. When I play with my 1650 the 4GB GDDR are basically always full, so I would have liked a bit more GDDR6, like 8GB. The other option would be to wait for the Nvidia Lovelace, but it might be another 6 months wait (proving availability is good!) and probably more expensive, even though with much better performance.

As you can see I am quite confused at the moment. Any suggestions?

Do you think I will be able to use my actual monitor at 60FPS using a proper USB C(Thunderbolt 3) to DisplayPort cable? Many thanks in advance and apologies for the long post!

So the Elmina uses DP 1.4 which can support 4K at 120Hz, obviously the output will also depend on the monitor and the cable.

I will just offer a note of caution here a laptop RTX 3060 on a 4K monitor, running something like warzone on high, is going to be sitting around 50fps average.

Also HDMI 2.1 which is the latest version can support 4k 120hz, but for any gaming computer you'd always use DP
Many thanks barlew & Spyder. The best my monitor can do at 4k is 60hz. This happens only if I connect a cable using the display port on the back on the monitor. The other end I connect it to my laptop (Nvidia 1650) on a mini display port. As soon as I use the HDMI connection (2.1 cable) it drops to 30Hz and I read it is common with my monitor.
I`ll keep an eye on the laptops available. Effectively if I want to use my monitor at its best I need to check that the USB type c has a Thunderbolt or display port support if I understand correctly.

For any connectivity, it's the port output through to cable through to port input.

So your monitor if it only supports 4k 30Hz is HDMI 1.4. So doesn't matter what the output from the PC is, or the cable, it will be limited by the port on the monitor as that's the weakest of the 3. They'd all have to be HDMI 2.1 to be able to handle 4k 120Hz.

Thanks Spider it is very clear it basically the bottleneck is the monitor.

Here it says
  • Video Signal
  • 1 x HDMI 2.0 1 x DP 1.2
So in theory it has a 2.0 HDMI but I can only get to work at 60Hz using the display port. I`ll make sure the new laptop has display port support and it should work.

Unfortunately not the best monitor but at last I got it cheap :p Worst case scenario I`ll buy a proper one in the future if I have enough firepower with the video card!
