Laptop Overheat and Shutdown Help

I have had my laptop for about a year and a half now and it would run fairly graphic hungry games okay, but increasingly now the Video Card(Mobility Radeon HD4650) seems to be overheating and inevitably shutting down the system.

Is this a sign my graphics card is dying and would I be able to replace it as I don't think it is onboard graphics or can I get it sent back to be Fixed?

Are you sure it's the graphics card? An not the CPU or the heatsink/Fan?

Dust build can collect up over time an could blocking the vents from allowing direct airflow an cooling.

Are you getting blue screens? Lines across your screen? Distorted colours?

It could also PSU failure, but doesn't sound like it.

If it was the graphics chip, i'm not sure what method PC Specialist use.

Either reflow * which is only a limited fix an will die again after two months *, Or reballing, which is a permenant fix.

You see your graphics chip, after you play games on it for one year or so and watching videos. Temperatures can go up to 99C, Which is basicly melting point.

Reballing, is where they use lead free high quality solder, which melting point is at 220C. You simply apply the silicon chip back where the chip goes.

It requires expensive equipment, requires a long time an does cost quite alot of money.

So what i recommend on any future laptop purchases is, After your one year warranty is up, get a service check on your laptop to prevent this GPU failure happening again, an it will happen if you don't get it serviced after one year.

Method one. Reballing. * permenant fix. Is replacing the solder under the GPU chip.

Method two. GPU replacement. Permenant fix. The same technique as reballing but a new graphics chip is used rather than your old one.

Method three. * Reflow *. Short term fix. Heating a chip with a IR, heatgun, Hair dryer or oven. it's a waste of time an money.

Open the ports at the back, carefully, and keep tab on all the screws. You will see some heatsink fins near the exhausts at the side or rear of the laptop, clear them of dust. Do the same for the system fan.

Its just not able to cool itself properly is all, i dont see a failing gpu from the symptoms you describe.

Nor did I when it happened to me ;) I didnt get pink lines straight away, just a rebooting laptop THEN pinkies. But we shall see. + I did check the inside, not much dust in there suprisingly. Anyway let us know how you get on.

Yes yes, lets discount over a decade of experience based on what happened with a vaio

I want to see real GPU PAIN!! artifacts, wavy lines, discolouration etc before it gets the old broken GPU stamp.

Wait a few months then ;)

If its left to overheat for a few months, no doubt. Self fulfilling prophecy though, best to tackle airflow sooner rather than later.

This is the biggest issue with laptops :( and that everyone takes the name literally and puts them on top of their lap, the result: sucking in fabric and overheating due to no airflow, oh and damaging yourself as apparently it does no good to you either :p I put a hard back A3 sized book I had when I was small under my laptops when theyre on my lap :)

Yeah it emits radiation which can kill certain things for men.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies and they have given me something to think about. It definitely sounds like video card is making the laptop heat up more so now than it used to. I checked the fans and airways for dust and all is clear so I maybe should look for a service.

Oh boy, haha, *buys a sheet of lead to put between said things and book*

I'm not sure which is worse mind, lead isn't well known for being good to you :)
(says the person who still has lots of lead models in the back room, oops)
