Laptop performance

Hello, recently ordered Elimina series (specs below) laptop from PCS... I have not had a good experience. Before I go back to them, I need to run all of this by anyone here with more technical knowledge than I. For reference, I bought this to use for work and playing some slightly out of date games while I travel for work.

Issue #1: It came with Control Centre Package v6.015 and Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Got laptop, set it to update to latest Windows patches, walked away. Came back and the Intel Driver Assistant was flashing to tell me a patch was due. Ok, I let it do that & restarted. Laptop was suddenly lagging (2-3 second input delay) when idle if I merely pressed the Windows key. It would show a massive spike in the integrated GPU (from 5% to 80-100%) when this happened if I had task manager open in the background. Did a SFC /scannow in CMD and it found Windows integrity errors & fixed them. Restarted but problem eventually reocurred. Next I uninstalled drivers, re-did the Windows patches... problem seems to be resolved. Uninstalled Intel's Assistant for good measure. Control Centre Package I have tried selecting different "profiles" and have left it on "performance" for now. I hate these sorts of things.

Issue #2: I then boot a game up (Dominions 5 for reference, a low graphic strategy game from 2017) and witness my FPS tank to 5-15 fps. Ok. Alt-tabbed out to see nothing unusual other than RAM at about 75%-85% useage. Extremely laggy just in the main menu, but not reflected in the useage on task manager / processes. I loaded up Old World - a slightly newer game (2021) but, again, not exactly Crysis... or whatever the kids play nowadays... Same issue, even worse. Laptop was plugged in the entire time, FYI.

Issue #3: RAM in the task manager seems to add up to about 2GB when idle but the system itself idles at around 5GB. I know Windows uses hidden resources here so I am just assuming Microsoft is upto it's usual nonsense caching stuff I'll never need. Including it for totality.

Solutions tried:
I then tried disabling the Integrated GPU, restarting laptop, restarting game, nope, that made everything worse! Now the 'overall' GPU workload was 20-30% but the game was showing as "100%" in the GPU column... not seen that before. Re-enabled integrated GPU. Undo, CTRL+Z the whole thing. Nope.

Tried setting the specific game to use that specific GPU in the clunky W11 settings to do so... problem was worse, not better. Reverted.

Tried altering the power settings in case there's some sort of throttling despite laptop being plugged in and on 100% battery... no change. Haven't yet reverted.

Old World now runs "okay" in the menu although still a little laggy. Game itself is unplayable (2-3 fps on lowest graphics settings).

Downloaded 3dMark Firestrike to test benchmark... it's in a 'gathering system info' loop which I just do not have the mental bandwidth to figure out tonight.

So... now I'm a little stumped.

Task manager running Old World - the GPU0 spike is me alt tabbing out of the game to screenshot... which had about 10 seconds of input delay due to the sheer amount of lag:
Screenshot 2024-02-04 193816.png

Task manager running Dominions 5 when still lagging massively in the main menu:
Screenshot 2024-02-04 151052.png

Should this system be able to run the things I think it can run? Or have I just legitimately replaced my (now very old) previous laptop with a 1080 that COULD run these things for an £800+ laptop that can't... is something not correct here? I have seen people play Witcher 3 using a 2050 at a good FPS which I imagine is incredibly more graphically intensive than Domininions or Old World.

In terms of other issues it could potentially be:

- Have used WizTree to check SSD space & spot anything 'just in case' taking up a mammoth amount of space... seems fine. 100gb+ remaining
- Have used CrystalDiskInfo to check SSD health... first two read/write were good but second two seemed to fall off. I'm not experienced enough to know what that actually means or if it's relevant - I imagine not as disk useage stays relatively low when games are on.
- Have run a virus scan. Nada.

Software I have installed since getting it, in no particular order:
- WizTree
- Crystaldiskinfo & Crystaldiskmark
- Steam
- Discord
- Microsoft Outlook (old and new beta version)
- Microsoft Teams
- Foxit PDF Reader
- Dominions 5 & Dominions 6 (games)
- Old World (game)
- 3d Mark

When was the last time you did a clean install?

My fist question is how full is the SSD, it's incredibly small?

Old world I'm assuming you've patched to the latest version as that was a known issue in early versions of the game.

Did you order with Windows 10 or windows 11?

Can you post the full specs from the order page?

Are you testing on battery or mains power?
Thanks for replying of a Sunday eve, truly a spider among men. During this process I now have an odd Issue #4: using snip tool and pasting into here is actually not pasting whatever is in my clipboard. Clipboard (Win Key + V) shows my SSD. When I CTRL+V it pastes my CrystalDiskInfo test from earlier... despite the fact that I've cleared the paste clipboard. Will restart and update this post to see if that fixes.

Full specs at bottom - apologies I hadn't included the rest as some has sentisitive info on there (Windows key etc).

SSD is currently at 128GB free of 237GB. Will screenshot once I have restarted due to Issue #4...

EDIT: Oddly this issue has persisted after a restart. If I screenshot anything (and 'clear all') it still pastes this:

Have been testing on mains power. I did briefly test on battery power 'just in case' but it didn't seem to change a whole lot.

Update on Issue #4: It appears to only exist when using Firefox. Of course it does! Paint happily accepts the newest thing copied to paste. I am going insane. It appears to now have resolved itself.

Actually, looking at your cpu results, I wonder if this is due to your cpu being power limited.

Can you reboot. Install HWInfo and have it running.
Then run prime95 for 5 minutes and have HWInfo open while it’s running and then post a screenshot of the HWInfo output for the cpu

Mr Spiderman, I think you are onto something here (running since 20:32, 20:41 as of pasting):

That’s not the screen I meant on HWInfo, I just mean the monitor page with temps and frequencies.

Could you rerun it?

Can’t be certain without the cpu results but it looks like the PL values may be locking the cpu to 0.44ghz which is usually due to an incompatible control center.

It needs a BIOS flash or I think PCS have a specific tool you can run to unlock it again.

But if you can close HWInfo, then reopen it and rerun the test and just post a screenshot of the cpu monitor part?

Doh. Apologies. Happily will rerun it. Having one of those days as you can imagine. Will reply separately when done. Thank you again for your help.

No probs. I'm fairly optimistic that this is the issue, as it's an easy fix and PCS are aware of it. Certainly the frequency in Firestrike corresponds to it also, just want to be 100% certain.

Yep!... Have I done it again... should I post after-shot too? I still have HWinfo open
You need to take the screenshot while prime95 is running after about 5 minutes.

If the above was taken during the stress test, then it conclusively concludes that the CPU is being heavily power limited to an average of 634mhz which is obviously nothing at all.

This will need either a BIOS reflash or their fix tool, but best to phone PCS in the morning.

Have you installed windows 10 at any point?

Yep it was taken right at the end of the stress test (literally ended it after screenshots).

Edit: sorry, nope, no Windows 10. Just had W11 installed by PCS straight out of the box last week.

Thanks for the help, will give them a message now and link to this thread, you're amazing for the tech support you provide here... I hope PCS realise that!
Let us know how it goes, I would call rather than emailing or messaging through the account, those can take a while longer.

Yeah, just asked because this issue normally shows if someones using a windows 11 control center on windows 10, first time I've seen these symptoms where that hasn't been the case.

It's possible, there could be some other issue related to power supply from the motherboard to the CPU, bottlenecking the flow that should be provided, but PCS will be able to tell pretty quickly.

All the best.

Ah that makes sense. I hope they realise how amazing your support is on the forums! Will let you know how I get on with them. I've had a few items from PCS before (gaming laptop + gaming PC recently) and everything has always been dandy.

Okay I called - went through it with the great tech support guy who remoted in. He spotted the same thing as us using OCCT and went a bit more in depth into Eventviewer - it's limited by firmware so he's raised a ticket with 2nd line support to see if there's a newer BIOS or if we should flash BIOS, etc.
