Laptop shutting down when gaming.

Hi there,

So my laptop has recently been shutting down by itself during gaming. This will happen randomly but only when a game is running, not with other activities. I've had this laptop since 2017 and never had this specific problem, the only time a significant problem happened was about a few months after purchase the laptop suddenly shut down and did not switch back on. This happened when there was a slight static current when my hand touched the body of the laptop. This was fixed after an RMA with PCspecialist and ever since nothing happened until now.
I did a repasting a few months back this year and there didn't seem to be any problems until a few weeks later. The temperatures of the GPU and CPU typically runs around 75-85°C during long periods of gaming, this was after the repasting, before that it was around 80-95°C. No damage was made during the repasting and all the wiring was done correctly during the disassembly of the heatsink and other parts (I followed a youtube video guide as it was my first time doing a repaste).
I have ordered some new thermal paste and plan to do a repasting again because I think I might have done it incorrectly but still not sure if its the main cause of the problem.
Thanks for reading and I would really appreciate it if someone could give some insight to the issue. I really hope that it's something that I can fix and not some kind of permanent damage where I would need to get a new PC as money is quite tight atm.

It could be the repaste as one of the main reasons for the laptop just shutting down would overheating.

Did you also clear out the fans etc from dust when you opened the machine up?

Are you noticing any other issues other than the shut down whilst gaming? What are you idle temperatures at the moment?

Are you able to monitor the temperatures under load (ie open the game up, but have temperatures / HWmonitor running too) - try to see what it peaks at before the laptop shuts down?

How is your battery life after 4 years too? Are you noticing any sudden drops in battery charge at all?

Have you checked the charger / connection of the charger is not loose in anyway causing the machine to 'unplug' from the charger and therefore the machine shutting down?

Hey thanks for the answer Bhuna50,
I cleared all the fans of dust when I did the repasting and also do regular cleaning with a air duster every 2 weeks.
No other issues other than shutting down during gaming. Idle temperatures are around 50-60°C, and during gaming its around 75-85°C.
Hard to catch what temperature peaks at when the laptop shuts down because its random, but it restarts automatically right after shutting down. The temperature at this point is the 70-85°C.
The battery has been changed to a brand new one in Janurary this year so shouldn't be any issues there.
The charger/connection is not loose, everything is plugged in properly.
I will receive the thermal paste this week and see how it is after the repaste. Just wondering if there are any underlying issues which means I can fix myself and try to save money on.
Thanks again for the reply.

I think it would be worth just waiting to see what the re-paste brings.

Can you check for the following files though:

In C:\windows - is there a MEMORY.DMP file at all - indicating that it might have been a BSOD that is causing the shut down (does the date tie in with the last shut down at all) - if it is, have a quick read of this and post the files tagging in ubuysa

Did someone call? 🤣

@GregPC, it sounds from what you're saying that it just switches off and stays off? Or, does it shutdown and then restart? If it's the latter then a kernel dump (in C:\Windows\Memory.dmp) would be useful, but if it's the former it's most unlikely to be software - there probably wouldn't be a kernel dump written in that case anyway.

Hi there, I found the file you mentioned in the C drive (the date indicates 15/09/21) which is about a month ago, the laptop has shutdown and restarted many times after that date, how do I go about doing a kernel dump?

Thanks.

You don't create a kernel dump manually, Windows will write one if there is a BSOD or similar kernel failure. Whenever you get a system failure always check for a kernel dump and upload it if you see one.

The dump you have from September is probably too old to be of use.

You say here that it shutsdown and restarts? Check in the folder C:\Windows\Minidumps and if there are any recent minidumps in there then upload those.

It's also worth looking in the folder C:\Windows\LiverKernelReprts and upload any recent dumps from there.

So I waited for a few of these restarts to check if these files show up but none of them are dated recently. I have checked all of the folders you mentioned and got nothing. Just to note that when this event happens, the laptop shuts down and immediately restarts itself again.
Anything else I can try?

Upload your System and Application logs, there might be some hints in there. See here for details on how to do that.

You could also try stopping the auto-restart, there may be error messages displayed that you're not seeing because of the restart. To do that enter the command sysdm.cpl into the Run command box. In the dialog that opens click the Advanced tab, then click the bottom Settings button (in Start-up and Recovery). Uncheck the box labelled 'Automatically restart'. That won't stop it shutting down but it may give you time to see any error messages.

Hi,
I have uploaded the two files as instructed. Please let me know if you need other files.
Hope this helps, thanks a lot.
There are a couple of repeating application errors in your Application log and at least one instance occur at around the same time as an error 41 message in the System log, and thus at around the time of a shutdown. One is for cmstatus.exe and the other is for dgpufix.exe and both seem to be related to Clevo Control Centre. In addition they are both accompanied by .NET errors so I'm guessing that these two apps are .NET applications.

It would seem then that the crashes may be related to Clevo CC so I'd suggest that you uninstall it completely, reboot and then visit the Clevo download site and download the latest version for your model of laptop.

Others on here, like @barlew, are more familiar with the workings of Clevo CC than I am so they might be able to help more if uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help.

I don't see anything else in your logs that would cause a system crash.

I uninstalled Clevo CC, restarted and downloaded it again from the clevo website. The laptop seemed fine for a while and then it restarted again by itself. Should I continue with the repaste? Or there is something else I can do.
Thanks

As I said I'm not the CC expert here. The issue could be with the Windows .NET libraries of course, or a more sinister Windows issue. Open an elevated command prompt (or PowerShell session) and run these commands....

dism /online/ cleanup-image /checkhealth - this will check your component store for corruptions, if it reports anything other than 'no corruptions found' then stop and post a screenshot of what it does say.

If the above dism command finds no corruptions then run the sfc /scannow command, that will check critical Windows files. If it reports errors found that were not corrected then stop and post a screenshot of what it does say.

Why are you repasting? Do you know that there is a temperature problem?

Hey,
I haven't been able to test it out yesterday, but I ran the first command and it reported no corruptions.
But the second command "sfc /scannow" had some corruption and did a repair, I uploaded the file shown on the window for reference. https://www.dropbox.com/s/4nto4gf75r30wh4/CBS.log?dl=0
After both of these the issue persisted with the laptop restarting randomly during gaming.
I only considered doing a repaste as I thought the problems started after I did the first repaste and there is no other solution I can think of. There is no temperature problem currently.

How are you reading temps btw? What software are you using? Is it open while you're gaming or are you exiting the game to then read the temps?

50 - 60 is very high for idling, much higher than I would be comfortable with.

But you don't specify the temp of GPU and CPU, just a combined temp so it's unclear which each is at. For a GPU for instance, something in mid 80's would be critical.

Could you first run the heaven benchmark which will target the GPU, and take screenshots of both CPU and GPU outputs in HWMonitor:

Then if you could do the same with Prime95 to target just the CPU and post results of CPU and GPU, this should be run at the max resultion and max settings your system is capable, so don't change any defaults:

The screenshots need to be taken perhaps 2 minutes after starting the benchmark.

Just ran the heaven benchmark and the results are:

However when I tried to run Prime95 with the "Blend, all of the above" option, the laptop just shutdown and restarted so I was unable to perform a test.

Thanks.

Heaven benchmark only targets the GPU, it doesn't touch the CPU, and your CPU temperatures are at load temps while it's running.

I think you definitely need to repaste the CPU.

What paste did you use when you repasted last time?

I used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut last time. So would you rule out any software issues, should I repaste first or do a wipe and reinstall windows?
