laptop switches back & forth between headphone & built-in speakers

I have a Cosmos series laptop (Windows 7) from PC Specialist. I recently noticed that if I plug headphones into the audio socket then Windows will switch back & forth between using the headphones & using the built-in speakers as the default audio device. The headphones work fine on other devices. Is this a hardware problem with the audio socket having trouble detecting that the headphones have been inserted?

If you haven't done so already I would give PCS a call. They'll sort it out. I'm not very knowledgeble about audio and such but I would try checking that the headphones are selected as the default audio output device in the list of playback devices. Also you could try disabling the built in speakers in the playback devices.

Make sure you have the latest driver installed for your audio card. Use Device Manager to identify the vendor and then search their website for the appropriate driver.
