Building a Video Editing PC

Hello,
My last two computers have been pcspecialist machines, most recently a laptop, but I think it’s time for a new desktop. I’m increasingly editing videos and the laptop sounds like it’s trying to take off.....! I’m sure its not good for it.

My older machine is a desktop, but as a recent enquiry on these forums revealed, it’s a little too old to be updated.
Also, the desktop was a big old Coolermaster case which is way too big for my flat, but it was virtually empty inside. I was using the bare minimum of its physical capacities which is why I’m hoping I can get what I need out of a smaller case.

I’ve been poking around on the system maker, but I’m finding it a little difficult as it doesn’t seem to display prices on the drop down menus (unless I’m doing something wrong?!) and also I’ve long ago lost touch with what specs I need. I find this especially tricky with graphics cards as there is a much greater array of options than there used to be which primarily seems to be variations of their memory, in which case I would usually go for the best that I can afford. Which is tricky to do when the aren’t individually priced.

Anyway, enough waffle...

TL;DR.......could someone please give some advice for a pc that is as small as possible without having to make a performance sacrifice.
It will primarily be used for editing looong videos (3 hour stage plays FML....)using Premier Pro. Footage is often 4K usually rendering down to HD. I have recently decided it is better to have my footage on an external USB3 drive and edit it from there (unless you think differently....?) and therefore I don’t need the huge storage associated with video. Again, happy to take advice but I’d be minded to have an SSD as the main storage and maybe a second for what stuff does get stored on board.
I will play games too when I’m supposed to be editing, stuff like a Total War title, but I’m unlikely to have more than a couple of games installed at a time, and I don’t need to play them at cutting edge settings.
I don’t need separate sound cards or optical drives etc etc

I don’t expect to spend less than £1k and would struggle to pay more than £1.5k but again am happy to take advice if that’s not enough?

Is that enough info?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Well, I've come up with this at the moment, which is probably affordable.
I like it if I can stretch to it getting stuff that is a bit future proof, so I was pleased I could make an i9 and a posher motherboard work, but I could certainly do with some advice about if this graphics card is enough?
And if cooling systems are actually a help?!

Thanks in advance....

I’m also looking for a PC for similar uses/budget as the OP so thought I’d jump in here rather than start a new thread.

The main difference is that I’m hoping to go for a small form factor case, as my old PC was a giant Coolermaster case but was virtually empty inside. So i want to check if there are any massive compromises that aren’t immediately obvious. eg your point about how hot the processor runs? I’ve gone top end on processor/memory/motherboard as it tends to make sense to pay as much as you can afford, but then is it madness to put this chip in a little case? Will the fans just be roaring the whole time?!

Any help/thoughts/suggestions would be gratefully received!

I've moved this to a new topic or else the advice for the other poster's system could get confused.
For reference, this is the old topic: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...diting-pc-need-advise-on-configuration.64779/

I'd argue very strongly against a SFF PC.

You can get perfectly reasonably sized ATX cases with footprints barely larger than the "mini" ITX ones.

Moreover, they don't have empty space, they have air; and free, unobstructed space helps airflow and cool powerful components especially when under heavy load like video editing. The space has its own purpose. :)

Because of how components are crammed into smaller cases, airflow is much more of an issue in mini ITX systems. To get around that, cases like the CM Elite 130 cram the GPU up against the side of the case with air holes in it to try to give it fresh air. In addition to the impact on noise, the rudimentary dust filters on the case mean the GPU and the system more generally get a lot dustier. (I have the CM120 Elite, so have seen that in action)

Also, if video editing, you'll want 32gb RAM most likely.

e.g.

Brilliant, thank you.

I’ll look again at the case choice!

Could I also trouble you to talk me through the storage solution you’ve put in there? I get that spinning discs are still a very valid storage device but I’m oblivious to how the M.2 SSD works with it? My old pc ran a small SSD for operating system and not much else and a big spinning disc for storage, but I get the impression the M.2 SSD solution isn’t the same thing?

Again, many thanks for the help!

An M.2 SSD is just an SSD. It's a different way to connect the SSD to the PC than Sata, and also allows for higher speeds than Sata (hence the MB/R + MB/R numbers being in 4 figures)

The storage choice was based on the SSD for OS, programs, active projects, and the HDD for mass storage.

There's not much point to keeping completed videos / ripped DVDs / your music collection etc on an SSD.
