Looking to buy a PC to meet the recommended system requirements for FFXIV: Dawntrail.

Hello, I have been looking at the custom PC building feature trying to design a computer that can meet the following reccomended specs. I am currently working with a very old machine that is far below the minimum system requirements, so I'm in a position where I'd need to replace every part (other than my accessories like my monitor, which is a 1920 x 1080) so I just plan on getting a new computer entirely.

I am however a little overwhelmed with trying to design the custom PC on the website, and would like some advice with regards to the case selection, motherboard, power supply and the power cooler. Just to make sure I don't design a computer that will struggle to operate. I have a maximum budget of £1200 and the spec I have currently designed reaches a total cost of £1079 (including VAT and delivery). If anyone here could offer any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'd start in a very different place. I don't think that system is as good as you can get for your budget. It would also have cooling issues with that puny air cooler and an Intel 12th-gen chip. I'd go with Ryzen and AMD instead. That's also the case for the graphics: the 3050 is pretty much a terrible card: not even as good as the 2060. AMD's 6650 XT is much better.

Basically, you have two options. The first is to get a decent last-gen PC. The other is to get a lower-end current-gen PC. The performance difference won't be huge. The latter will be much more upgradable, e.g. with a better CPU, and will therefore have a longer lifespan. The former can have some nice things like more and faster storage, though of course that could be added later to the second machine.

In both cases, I've gone a little over budget, but this could be avoided by going for a cheaper case and no DVD writer: are you sure you need one?!

Here's the last-gen option:

Thank you for the quick reply! And thank you for the advice, I wouldn't have known the 3050 is a bad pick without it. With regards to the dvd writer, I was thinking I'd want something I could watch DVDs with. But that may have been a misunderstanding on my part.

A more upgradable machine is what I would like going forward, so the lower end current-gen PC is preferrable to me. So thank you for that advice as well. Having removed the DVD writer and changed to a cheaper case, this is what I have currently. The main website also recommended I use a 550W power supply rather than a 750W so I have swapped to that as well, unless there's a particular reason why I shouldn't use that that I'm not aware of.

I'd strongly recommend going for more power supply capacity. Partly because it's just a superior product: more efficient, quieter, longer lasting; but also because it gives you more room for upgrades.

You can get a cheap external DVD drive that will do that job for you and offer more case flexibility. However I'd go for the Corsair 4000D case rather than the PCS one as it's probably going to be quieter. Or send in an option with "send in your own case" if you specifically want a white one.

Noted! I'll follow that advice when I make the order. I'm just waiting until January to do so in case I get hit by any last minute christmas expenses, as you do.

Thank you very much for the help, you're a champ.

No worries. I'd post again before you do in case there are any new products or prices have changed in that time.
