M1 PassMark Score

what's everyone's thoughts on the M1 performance... v EVERYTHING else!?
The M1 for a first attempt at an ARM SOC is nothing short of miraculous, and you have to remember, it’s only in their low powered machines so far.

Wait for the M1x rumoured to be in the MacBook Pro 16” and the Mac Pro, expectedly scalable up to 64 cores. That’s gonna be a serious contender.

I fully expect Apple to dominate the silicon space within 2 years.

Wow! That's impressive!

There certainly seems to be plenty of room left to find gains in terms of IPC and those results are another example of it - I wonder if that is where things will become interesting in the months/years to come?

apple designing there own chips is one of the smartest moves certainly of the last 20 yrs for if not ever, manufacturing key components in house cuts out the middle man and any supply chain turbulence, certainly will shake things up although remains to be seen what this looks like with gaming as apple are not known for that.

This is another area where I think the market will drastically change to streaming services with the likes of GForce Now being at the front.

But, strangely, the MacMini doesn't feel as responsive as the 2019 iMac doing the same tasks. Part of this I put down to non-native libraries/software, but the OS is native and there's a tiny bit more 'lag' when I double-click to open windows

Remember it’s a gen one version of Mac OS on ARM so won’t be optimised yet with both the OS and third party software, there’s a lot of optimisation yet to happen at the OS level.

That's why I'll wait for the M1X or M2 to replace my work iMac - and for 32gb to become an option. No need for huge internal storage though as I can make do with TB3/USB-C connected drives.

Just assumed it would be as perky as a recent iPad or iPhone feels on opening recently opened & closed apps - including native ones or after the Intel apps had done their translation to ARM language.

It's good as it is, and it will only get better.

the only thing holding streaming via gaming back is a section of society does not have fast enough or decent internet connections, once they do, that will be a big market for sure.

Absolutely and especially at the entry level budget. I think higher end systems and budgets will choose a custom gaming build for a while to come, but those on a strict budget, who have the internet supply to support it, it makes sense to stream. GeForce Now is so ahead of the competition, it’s actually a good experience.

Such a shame Google dropped the ball on stadia, I really don’t know what they were playing at on that.
