Microsoft recall

At a Build conference event on Monday, Microsoft revealed a new AI-powered feature called "Recall" for Copilot+ PCs that will allow Windows 11 users to search and retrieve their past activities on their PC. To make it work, Recall records everything users do on their PC, including activities in apps, communications in live meetings, and websites visited for research. Despite encryption and local storage, the new feature raises privacy concerns for certain Windows users.

"Recall uses Copilot+ PC advanced processing capabilities to take images of your active screen every few seconds," Microsoft says on its website. "The snapshots are encrypted and saved on your PC’s hard drive. You can use Recall to locate the content you have viewed on your PC using search or on a timeline bar that allows you to scroll through your snapshots."

By performing a Recall action, users can access a snapshot from a specific time period, providing context for the event or moment they are searching for. It also allows users to search through teleconference meetings they've participated in and videos watched using an AI-powered feature that transcribes and translates speech.

This is the reason I normally turn AI programs off, and if i can completely remove them from the system

Me too, I do have an alexa in the kitchen but that's the only AI thing in the house, I don't believe in having that much "always on" stuff, certainly not on a damn PC.

This is such a bad idea. I can only imagine the hacks that are going to result from this.

Siri is off on all my Apple devices.

Nothing in the house with Alexa.

Cortana/copilot off on all my Microsoft devices.

AI and 'data sharing' options all turned off on my 'smart' TVs.

The only AI I use is for image generation/manipulation in Photoshop/Firefly...and it's only on when I am actually using it (nothing stored in Adobe's cloud).

i like the way they put that bit in,

Microsoft is taking some steps to make sure that the snaps Recall takes stay private. According to the company, the snaps remain encrypted on your local storage drive and are never synced to the cloud or sent to Microsoft. You also have the ability to exclude apps from Recall, delete individual snaps, or disable the feature entirely. It's easy to see why Recall would need a powerful NPU to search through all of those images without getting any help from a server on the Internet.

As Microsoft explains, "The default allocation for Recall on a device with 256 GB will be 25 GB, which can store approximately 3 months of snapshots. You can increase the storage allocation for Recall in your PC Settings. Old snapshots will be deleted once you use your allocated storage, allowing new ones to be stored."

Microsoft states that "Recall snapshots are kept on Copilot+ PCs themselves, on the local hard disk, and are protected using data encryption on your device and (if you have Windows 11 Pro or an enterprise Windows 11 SKU) BitLocker." From the wording here, that looks like your snapshots will only be encrypted if you have Windows Pro or a business Windows code.
