Have you tried adjusting it to 144Hz?
Ah, the monitor HDMI is very old so doesn't support 144Hz.
You have to use the DVI port on the monitor for 144Hz, so you'd need a mini DP to DVI or HDMI to DVI.
Something like this should do:

Ah, actually you're right, it can only support 120Hz.
You'd have to go DVI-D to mini DP then like this:
