Does anyone know if something like this Mini Power Minder is available in the UK? Socket enables you to switch off powered peripherals automatically when your PC switches down.

Found this on Amazon but seems to be a high risk of faults:

Guess it begs the question of whether it would be possible just to make a usb device that plugs in to the computer directly as a peripheral without the need for the master plug connection.
