Moderate-Good Gaming Machine

Hi all,

I'm looking to replace my 4-year-old Core2duo machine in the next month or so and have spent a bit of time researching (always fun) and attempting to set a custom spec here. I bought my last machine from pcspecialist and it's been great so am more than happy to order from the company again :)

I use my desktop machine mostly for games and web-browsing but also a little video (re)encoding. I mostly play older and less spec-intensive games but occassionally I want to play high-end ones if they catch my interest and I wanted to make sure the spec below will do a reasonable job when asked to sretch its legs a bit.

I picked the i5-2500k as I've read that it is a top-performer and more than a match for the previous-generation i7s. The other option was the AMD Phenom ii x4 970 but looking around at comparisons and benchmarks it appeared a little disappointing.

The video card was a hard choice and probably the most difficult choice I had to make. The reason I have gone for the 6870 is that it stacks up well in performance tests and has low power requirements (allowing me to save money on the PSU and my bills!). However, some doubt remains as to whether I might save more cash without losing any significant performance by sticking the 6850 in instead? I ruled out the 69xx cards on cost grounds and the NVIDIA cards on power consumption (460/470) and cost (5xx). Would you consider that a reasonable judgement? (I'm also fully aware that by choice of motherboard I haven't left room to upgrade to crossfire - i'm fine with that).

This spec pretty much hits the ceiling of my budget so any chages which increase cost would be hard to justify but I would appreciate any feedback and advice, especially if I have made any wasteful choices.

Thanks for your time!

Get rid of the sound card, change the cpu to i5-2400 or i5-2500, not the K version. Change the power supply to 600w or 650w, the gpu to gtx470, or gtx560ti, these will have better performance in programs that use cuda plugins. I would also consider getting a caviar black instead of caviar green. You could stay with the amd 6870 but having a 600w psu would be a good idea if you want to ever change your gpu to something more powerfull.
I would recommend the spec below its £20 extra but I think that this would be well spent.

Many thanks, bg92!

I took note of your suggestions and did a bit more research. Wow, I didn't realise the 560Ti is such a good card - I don't know how I missed it when looking around.

Removed the sound card, as suggested. I can live with onboard sound and can always throw in a card in the future if I want to. Also, good shout with moving to the 2500 as I am not usually into overclocking and my understanding is that this is the only real benefit that the k version offers over the 2500 (which has turbo boost anyway, right?).

I have left the PSU as it was - the 560Ti didn't require the 600w according to the configurator. I won't be needing any more than that for a while!

The changes result in this:

That's certainly helped to cut costs. I reckon that to be a oretty robust system for most current gaming requirements :)

I was concerned about the Chipset SATA port issue but Iwon't be using the 3gb/s port anyway so should be fine!

Now, all being well, I can think about getting this baby ordered when my current block of shifts end!

I would change the case to cm310 elite or cm 912+, but if you are fine with the looks of the standard case then it should be ok. but if you want better cooling then change to one of above, if you want it to be quiet the cm 500 sileo would be a good choice. I would want my pc to look good, wouldn't be able to look at an ugly box everyday.
