Monitor compatibility issue to my new build + purchase advice

Hi, i suspect this might make me look bit silly, but after purchasing new gaming build, I realized my current monitor is likely too old for connecting to my new case/graphic card in any meaningful way. My monitor has the DVI, VGA and HDMI ports only (no DP port). The new hdmi cables I have (although they fit both ports to case and my monitor) don't do anything and monitor doesn't display a thing - remains dark (it is in great working order otherwise, in my current poor elderly build).

I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion whether it's possible to connect my asus vg278hr to the build (please see below) in a way that is reasonable. As I suspect this is not an option, my second question is what would you recommend for a new monitor to my build (budget: 800 +/- 100; but prefer bit cheaper if possible without compromising performance much according to what my build can do)? Happy to pay the higher end of my nudget if it's one of those super wide monitors. Many thanks.

Are you sure you're plugging into the graphic card and not the motherboard
yes (did the mistake in the past), there are 3 dp ports and 1x hdmi port available where the graphic card is attached. the hdmi in the area of the mother board is actually sealed off. I also thought about whether those cables I bought are simply wrong for this, but I don't know if that is the case. When I try those cables and switch the new PC on, the monitor just displays text: 'no DVI input'. I think it's just the monitor not being up for this?
Cables I tried: 1. 4K HDMI Cable 1M HDMI Lead/cord -Snowkids Ultra High Speed 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 Cable 4K@60Hz for TV/4K TV, 3D, Blu-ray player,with Ethernet Function,Video
2. Amazon Basics High-Speed, Ultra HD HDMI 2.0 Cable, Supports 3D Formats and with Audio Return Channel, 0.9 m

It sounds like it's on the DVI channel rather than HDMI, just change the input channel?
