Hi everyone, :)

My 75-year-old Dad is a massive aircraft nut and is very interested in MSFS2020.

He presently has an antique P.C with antique monitor which he uses for writing and printing letters that’s it.

He has a 42-inch 1080p T.V bog standard Panasonic.

My understanding to really play MSFS2020 and experience its full potential he would be looking at £1500 min P.C not including monitor so probably £2000+. When I told him he almost passed out and said he could not afford that. Plus, he would be buying it just to play MSFS2020 no other games and the P.C would be a wasted on him. :(

So, I am thinking now about him buying the X box series X hooked up to his present T.V mentioned above (which I know would hold it back at 1080p ) But £449 he said is O.K. just. Hopefully he will upgrade his T.V soon to a 4k one which would improve the experience on X box series X.

Not sure when MSFS2020 is coming out on x box series x but now we know its spec is it really bad compared to an idea P.C set up or does it hold its own? My Dad has below average eyesight and is not really interested in tech would he really notice the difference?

I imagine the standard X box series X controller will really limit it, do you know what specialised controller or joystick would be compatible with X box series X to really improve the experience on X box? Any recommendations.

The best thing would be if in the future X Box series X does get VR which would take the T.V out of the equation but not sure if playing MSFS 2020 on X box series X (VR) is just a pipe dream. I know it is coming to P.C and there are rumours on the net about it also coming to X Box series X in the future.

Any advice and recommendations on how to help my Dad experience MSFS2020 as best he can on his limited budget.
Is X Box series S a better option it is only £249 but is the extra £200 worth it for series X spec improvement?

I can’t thank you all enough.

Bob.

The XBox series X would be around £1700 to build an equivalent PC, it's around an RTX3070 in power, so is no slouch.

From what I know MSFS2020 won't be available until 2021 on XBox, although nothing is confirmed as yet:

You can plug in any keyboard and mouse to the Series X and Playstation 5 which is a huge bonus and one of the reasons I'll be shelling out for a PS5. I'm sure there will be compatible flight sticks also. It really is simply a mini PC in it's hardware design and code layer.

Also worth mentioning again, you can do a subscription to XBox which includes the console and full GamePass for 2 years at £28.99 so it's zero percent interest for the whole 2 year period, it's definitely the way to do it if you don't want to shell out all at once.

Xbox would definitely be the route I would go down for sure. It's an awful lot of money to pay for one thing but it really is a fantastic simulator.

I've literally just been green-lit for the VR beta testing so I'll be on that after the home schooling has finished :D

Brilliant thanks Scott!

Look forward to hearing what it is like on VR! I do hope X box Series X gets VR in the future for MSFS 2020.

Hope home schooling is going well, how is your simrig? Anything new to report, accessories or new games to take advantage of it?

Cheers

Bob.

Thanks a million, Spyder,

Yes, the Series X / PS5 are such great value! And like you say no slouch for the price!

Thanks for the info on the release date for MSFS2020 (X Box) hope it Is not too long into 20201.

Thanks also for all the helpful links you provided and what you say about keyboard and mouse compatibility, really helpful. Like you say the new consoles are less like consoles and or like mini gaming P.C’s.

You're right the X Box game pass is amazing value, My Dad might get hooked and venture outside MSFS2020!!!! I may catch him playing Halo!!!

Thanks so much for your reply and hope all is going well for you.

Spot of resurrection in order here.

For those in to MSFS or VR, well Microsoft have now enabled VR with MSFS 2020.

Another update due for MSFS 2020.

I can see it now.

F-15 driver - Newark Local, this Bones-01 on approach, requesting clearance to land.

ATC - Negative Bones-01 2 slow movers ahead of you, climb and maintain 3 thousand.

F-15 driver - Fox 3 ... (pause) Fox 3

F-15 Driver - Newark Local, this is Bones-01 on approach, requesting clearance to land, circuit appears clear....

(alas, with MSFS that will not be happening, shame fancy a GBU-39 sortie over Wolverhampton).

Long may this continue shrinking sizes of games as hitman 3 proved

"Fortunately, Microsoft has taken care of this drawback, so the recently released update to version 1.16.2.0 now reduces the initial download size from over 170GB to just 83GB. Microsoft hasn’t offered any specifics to let us know how it managed to cut the download size in half, with the company only explaining that the update includes “some optimization for the initial full download of the title.”

Glad I'm not going to be downloading so much when I have to install it on the new PC then!
