Need help with buying a PC for work and gaming

Hi!

I have recently, as many others have, been working from home. I am currently self-employed and work as a video editor. The problem is, I have always worked using a Macbook quite out of date. It does the job, but it just isn't the same anymore given the work that I do, like handling 4k footage and rendering projects. This has led me to investing in a PC that is primarily used for work, but, I also want a PC that is strong on the gaming front too.

So now here I am, wondering what PC would be best for what I want and if anyone out there would be able to give me any advice/pointers. Below I will put a little brief summary of what I need the PC to do and my price range, any help or guidance is greatly appreciated!

  • PC capable of rendering 4k footage quickly in Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, etc. Currently, my Macbook Pro is incapable of manipulating graphics in real time, so there is always a slight delay to when I click and drag, I will have to wait until it catches up to me (I'm not sure what parts make this quicker, sorry I'm not as knowledgeable in this field as I should be:LOL:).
  • Price range around £500-£1000, although I am willing to stretch it a little bit further if there is PC that has a much better spec with only a small price rise.
  • Large storage space for storing raw footage that also doesn't effect performance.
  • PC that can also be used for gaming on the side, nothing major in terms of running everything ultra max settings, but still something that would be able to run games such as Apex Legends, GTA V, Cyberpunk, without many problems.
The very main priority for me is getting a PC that is just quick for video editing, something that edits in real time unlike my snail of a Macbook Pro. But overall I think that is pretty much it!

I really appreciate anyone who can help out or even point me to a good PC out there that can do what I need, thankyou for reading!

With the price on parts at the minute mate you're going to want to spend around £1400 - £1600 for anything half way decent.

Especially for a machine that will be heavily editing and rendering. £1000 just doesn't go far in the current climate

I'm guessing the price is due to the graphics cards that are coming out? A mate of mine says he bought a PC from here a while ago for around £750 and he's able to edit and render 4k videos that are around 15 minutes long in about 5-10 minutes. He uses his for gaming mostly though so I thought I would base my price on that. He did just upgrade to the 3070 so I don't know if his PC rendered in those times with the 3070 or with the graphics card he got with the full purchase.

The RTX 3070 costs about £700-800 itself nevermind the rest of the PC and the costs of computer parts has risen astronomically in the past 3 months and only set the rise. I'll do out a build here shortly of what I think will do the job but be prepared for a larger cost than you expect

This is what I would be looking at for 4K rendering and editing. The GPU could be beefier but I believe this would work, there are guys here who are wizards at optimising their storage space for the best prices. I'll admit I'm not the best at that so no doubt someone could offer better advice on that angle as welll

So what exactly does the processor and amount of RAM change? I don't necessarily mind having average rendering times, it's mainly the in software performance I mostly need because the projects I will be rendering won't be lengthy or high. I also don't mind upgrading along the way too, because anything that is better than my Macbook Pro would be great to have as soon as possible. These are the specs of my Macbook Pro:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor: 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

Have absolutely no idea if these are even good specs or not, I recently upgraded the memory and it made a bit of difference but not much.

Data has to be quickly accessible when editing to be able to do it efficiently and effectively, more RAM allows you to process larger images and faster RAM allows the processor to read and utilise that RAM much faster. If you starve the CPU of RAM it will cause everything to slow down. Not being able to edit in real time is a consequence of not enough RAM and not fast enough RAM

I'm seeing that they are recommending a minimum of 32GB of ram for 4K editing and 16GB is recommended for HD

The MacBook Pro you listed above is fairly bad, even for a 2012 machine. 1333Mhz RAM is massively slow especially compared to modern RAM which is more than twice the speed and almost three times the speed in 3600Mhz RAM

4K Editing is going to work your processor very hard, you'll need proficient cooling. The standard cooler in the 3800XT I wouldn't recommend

I will say that the 3800XT should be good enough to do the trick but it's a previous generation processor whereas the latest 5600X and 5800X offer significant upgrades.

Secondly the GPU will allow 4K output but in terms of allowing you to actually edit and work with video at that size, I wouldn't be so sure.

Most alarming about that build however is the PSU, this will just simply cripple any chance of an upgrade later down the line. You wouldn't be able to add anything to the build with that supply.

What I would suggest is maybe going super super light with like 710 GPU and upping the PSU, then later in the year upgrading to a better GPU?

And the case...DONT go with that case!
To be completely honest, i'm not sure any of the PCS own brand cases are worth taking.

For gaming the 1030 wouldn't be a good choice, it would struggle to play the games you listed at anything apart from the lowest settings. I'd also recommend changing your SSD for a larger size and to an M.2 format for faster speeds. The PSU will need changing for a better unit to increase longevity of the system and if you'd want to do any upgrades. The AMD stock cooler will need upgrading for this CPU, I'd recommend the Cooler Master 240 AIO at a minimum And for faster WiFi bandwidth and bluetooth you could add the 2nd wireless card for £9. Also the Silver warranty for £5 is a great shout.

Realisitcally I don't think you'll get a 4K editing rig and a sweet gaming system for anywhere near £1K. I'd recommend saving up to at least £1,500 and coming back in a few months when prices are lower

This looks a lot better and agree with @Nursemorph 's comments. Made a spec that have included his comments as well as improved the case choice. The one you have on this spec only comes with 1 fan so you'd have to add extra. You could get away with the PCS Spectrum RGB as it comes with 4 fans and decent airflow. I'd just recommend the 4000D as it'll be a better quality case. I'd also recommend upgrading this GPU as soon as possible if you want to play any more intensive games as I can't imagine the experience will be very enjoyable on the 550 for Cyberpunk
