New Build and a few questions

DaelpixPhotos

Super Star
It's that time when I want to upgrade my current PC after 8 years.

Original build thread: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/pc-review-bought-in-2013.82789/

Computer uses:
  • Photo Editing
  • Gaming
I was thinking of SSD and M.2 and not HDD:
  • First drive for installing Windows (250GB)
  • Second drive for photos (1TB)
  • Third drive for games (2TB)
  • Size of above drives may change
Since the PC is on the floor, I'm not bothered about fancy lighting in the PC.
I don't want 8G RAM again and since 32G is only a little more, I may as well get that instead of 16G.

  1. Stuck choosing between i7 and i9. Any suggestions?
  2. If choosing a 'WIFI' motherboard, my understanding is that I don't need a separate drive for WIFI? Is this correct? Any benefits to a WIFI motherboard?
  3. Unsure about extra case fans
  4. Unsure about GPU
  5. Is there any point in ordering the Arctic Thermal Paste, or should I leave it as standard?
  6. I would like a new monitor. 21.5" or a little larger, but not too large or my speakers will not fit on my desk. (Logitech Z200 2.0 Speakers). Must be capable of handling photo editing and gaming (Samsung LC24F390FHUXEN Curved 24" ?????)
  7. Not fond of using an air CPU cooler again as mine gets dusty from time to time. I have cleaned it. But never cleaned the entire case thoroughly as I've been nervous/scared of taking everything out and finding that I can't put it back together again (and I don't have the right tools).

This is built off using a 'game based PC' (Flight Sim)
  • I would rather have a CPU Cooler with fans to go on the top of the case because the PC is against a wall and may help with getting rid of the heat, although I don't mind if I have to stick with the exhaust fan
  • Fast USB could be an option for USB drives and camera

Take a rerad of this especially the AMD v intel section, no one on here would recommend an intel, if you let us know the budget and monitor details I'm swure we can sort you a nice AMD with a lot better bang for your buck

Pipped to the post lol. I was just saying the same.

Well, I'll add that if going for non air cooled CPU you likely won't be needing that thermal paste at least. For that AiO solution, assuming with AMD 5600X and up, a H100i/240mm size at least would do you best.
Aside from those you're much on the right track. Depending on your budget, 1440p and a GPU to match might be good going forward.

I'll have to watch videos and read up on Intel vs AMD. I didn't know those on the forum don't recommend Intel. It's all new to me.

Budget can go up to £2000, but less if I can get away with it, as I want a new monitor, and maybe a new keyboard and mouse (mouse can be cheap).

So £2k ti include a budget for monitor and peripherals? What are doing with current PC, if not going to use it you can use the windows license from that and save some money

See original post what I'm using the PC for.

I want to use the PC to play the latest large games such as the new Flight Sim

Thank you for the build.

I'll stay with 1080. I can't use a monitor that is over 24" on my desk.

Haven't decided what I'm going to do with my current PC yet.

A few questions:
  1. If choosing a 'WIFI' motherboard, my understanding is that I don't need a PCI-E Card for WIFI? Is this correct? Any benefits to a WIFI motherboard?
  2. Unsure about extra case fans, I guess the more the merrier?
  3. Unsure what GPU would be best

do you have the configuration link for this as it could do with some tweaks

Choosing a monitor is the key first step, as you want the monitor and the tower to be well matched. You could consider a VESA mount for the monitor, so it takes up less desk space. You could then consider a 1440p build with a 27" monitor.

Your questions:
  1. Yes, WiFi on the motherboard means you don't need a separate card.
  2. Depends on the case. Get a good case and you don't need to fill it with fans: it turns into diminishing returns and ends up just adding noise. Choose a better case (4000D Airflow, for example) and you don't need eight fans or whatever.
  3. Depends on what monitor you go for.
  4. As above, I'd suggest getting a 27" 1440p monitor and wall/desk mounting it. I'd choose the AOC Q27G2U. Then I'd recommend the 3060 Ti.
  5. The AMD air cooler is fine for the 5600X on a budget. The Hyper 212 is a classic and very good for sightly lower temperatures if air is a preference. Otherwise water cooling is a good plan and maintenance-free.
  6. 16GB is probably fine. No point getting more for now if it means compromising the rest of the build as it's trivial to add more later.

This bares very little resemblance to the build that i posted, in fact in the main part of the build I think the only things that are the sameare the Motherboard & RAM.
If you're going for 5800X then you need a 570 Motherboard, sata SSD are so slow compared to the M.2 that i specced, you want to spec a high wattage PSU than that, to give you headroom for future upgrades,

The case I chose seems to be the best option for me, with a DVD drive and Card Reader, as well as room for fans. The other two cases that have a DVD drive don't suit, and the second from the left I don't like the design.

I don't want a 27" monitor. I want to keep the costs down as much as possible. Adding an arm for the monitor just adds even more money to the setup. 1080 is fine with me.

That case is not a great choice. It's the opposite of what I was saying: it's very enclosed and has been little airflow, which makes it very poor at cooling. Add to that the insufficient cooler you have and you may well suffer from high temperatures and perhaps decreased performance. An external USB DVD drive is probably best, unfortunately, because cases with the housing built in are now few and far between, often quite old, and generally not very good airflow-wise.

The WiFi card is a big downgrade (though if you have a particularly cheap router it may not matter) for not much saving. The power supply is also a significant downgrade and may limit your future options.

With a monitor, you'd be best going for a 24 inch 1080p 144Hz monitor, from the sound of it. You can't buy proper gaming monitors for less than that.

220T and 5000D are both good options.

But the 3900X isn't a great choice because it's the last generation: both the 5900X and the 5800X outperform it in gaming.

I'd still counsel against that cooler, though, as 120mm AIOs are not a great option, and as someone who kind of skimped on a power supply when I bought my computer, I'd definitely advise going for at least 750W.

Alright.

Changed to Ryzen 9 5900X and 750W.

As for cooling, FrostFlow 150 Series High Perf, or, Hyper 212 ?
