What’s your thoughts guys?
I’ve seen a few threads on here with issues post-purchase, is it fairly common with PCS, I’m slightly more nervous after reading some threads that I was pre-purchase.

thanks!

What will you be using the rig for? There's probably a fair few things that can be optimised (I note from recent threads that intel CPUs are not best value for money at the moment and it depends on your uses if the X299 chip will be useful) if you're still in pre-production you should be able to make changes without overly affecting timescales.

If you bought a bag of tomatoes at a shop, and they were fine, you wouldn't go back to the shop to thank them for supplying functional tomatoes. Well, most people wouldn't. You'd only go back to the shop to discuss the purchase if you cut them open and they were dodgy inside.

So too on internet forums as in real life - sometimes people post just to show off the new shiny thing, but you're much more likely to post if there is an issue or you want to get something checked out.

Things can go wrong with any purchase of course, but if you compare (for example) the number and score of PC Specialist Trustpilot reviews, you'll see they rank as high as any other reputable company out there. This means that not only are problems relatively rare, but that when they do happen, PCS do a good job of fixing them up. That's been my experience anyway - sometimes mistakes happen, but they will go above what's required to sort them.

Strongly agreed!

What is this PC for? It's very possible that a different spec would give you more performance for the same price.

Thank you for the reply, it’s a fair point!
My main uses are 4K editing, 3D modelling, autocad work and I would like the option to game using the best settings, if possible.

The liquid series needs periodic maintenance (drain, flush, refill) and component upgrades are more complicated and expensive as you need to buy new waterblocks ETC for the GPU.

Instead of an Intel 12-core, an AMD 16-core would probably be the better option here.
For gaming, you want a half-decent monitor - the one in the spec is probably a bit of a minimum for this budget level.
Faster SSD
I didn't add in the accessories as you can add in whatever secondary monitor, KB etc you want. NB - for the gaming monitor you will want to connect it via DP, not HDMI.

Ok, what are your thoughts?

Oussebon has you covered with the spec to go for. I wouldn't change a thing with it to be honest.

With regards to your original spec.....

Custom water loop kits are only really purchased for aesthetic reasons or for keeping GPUs cool along with the CPU in the same system. We are past the point of custom loop kits making meaningful gains over a good AIO cooler (Such as the H115i above). They are hugely expensive and require periodic maintenance that just make them a pain to live with.

The X299 chipset is pretty much dead in the water. For throughput and productivity the AMD offerings absolutely obliterate it, that's from the consumer grade offerings as well... if you look at the HEDT offerings from AMD they aren't even comparable they are so far ahead.

Most ROG STRIX offerings are overkill, this is definitely case with the X299 board.

If you drop out the water cooling kit, the X299 build along with the STRIX, you effectively end up with what has been recommended above. That case is absolutely stunning too.

Guys, thanks for the replies! I really appreciate the inputs.

I have called them and they are going to call me back to reconfigure the build.

You can use the above link posted by Oussebon. That allows you to go in and change things to suit.

I've loaded the link, however it wont allow me to change processors from Intel to AMD, Also wont allow me to change the liquid cooling option on the configuration either.

To change platform from Intel to AMD requires cancelling the build and starting over as it’s a whole new configurator.

it’s definitely worth doing, AMD are streets ahead of intel with their latest processors and I would say for your kind of workload it’s almost crazy not to.

I don't, but these chips weren't available when I was building. I would have a new AMD build in a heartbeat right now. Intel have fallen away, most don't expect them back to the top for a year or 2 I would imagine.

With gaming it can be argued that Intel is still technically on top, the margin is so fine that it doesn't make much of a difference. However, in contrast, when it comes to heavy work loads & multi-tasking the likes of the 3950X cannot be compared to any consumer grade CPU that Intel offer. Even their HEDTs don't match up to the AMD consumer chips (as described). A modern day threadripper chip is laughably bonkers.

Perfect thanks! Do you guys currently run AMD? If so are you happy with it?
I just built a 3950x machine for a friend for data science analysis. His 4 year old Mac used to time out running a sequence after an hour and a half. The new build completed 7 passes within 15 minutes before he realised and stopped the process. They are insanely good, to the point I had to restart everything to make sure it was real!

I have my 3770k from 2012 still. Intel haven't managed to tempt me with an upgrade. When AMD release Zen 3 later this year, that's what I expect to upgrade to.
