Oh, my sweet summer child. What do you know about the extreme preset? The extreme preset is for the water chiller when the CPU glows a hundred degrees hot. The extreme preset is for 14nm++ after Intel's stuck on Skylake for years, and children are born and live and die, all without Canonlake. That is the time for the extreme preset, my little lord; when the RTX 2080 tis move through the woods.

Thousands of years ago Creative Assembly made a game engine that lasted a generation. #PCMasterRace froze to BSOD in their gaming chairs, same as the console peasants on their sofas, and gamers smothered their CPUs rather than see them melt, and wept and felt their tears evaporate off their faces.

In that darkness the Turing GPUs came for the first time. They raytraced through cities and kingdoms, charging their inflated prices, hunting with their packs of pale spiders big as hounds...

...

Game of Thrones memes to one side, the spec's not going to achieve what you're after.

The GTX 1050 ti is weaker than a GTX 970.

You could expect medium settings on it (that would have been my guess, and seems backed up by RPS who say their 1050 ti struggled to keep 60fps at medium though was not far off):
...all but two graphics cards I’ve tested (Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and AMD’s Radeon R9 270) were able to run Three Kingdoms at 60fps on Medium at 1920×1080 without much trouble at all. The GTX 1050 Ti wasn’t far off 60fps, all told,

They go on to say that a GTX 1060 was close to 60fps average on high. However, talking about average FPS means you will get drops below that and possibly a bit of stutter if the variations are quite steep.

Also note that a GTX 1060 in a laptop is meaningfully less powerful than a desktop GTX 1060.

As for Ultra, DSO gaming noted that only an RTX 2080 ti was able to keep over 60fps:
This doesn't mean people should buy a £1300 GPU for 1080p 60hz gaming - rather that the engine is brutally demanding at the highest settings.

The game's only just out, so maybe worth waiting a few days to see if PC Gamer (especially) and/or guru3d do any more detailed performance analyses.

At the very least you should expect to go for the GTX 1060 in the laptop, and ideally dual channel RAM, and an SSD.

What's the top budget, realistically? People can suggest options within that range for you to consider.

Also, bear in mind what 'recommended' actually means; specifically:

PC RECOMMENDED SPECIFICATIONS
  • Expected around 45-55 FPS on campaign map and in a 1v1, 21 units vs 21 units battle, default graphics preset set to “High”, running at 1920×1080
  • Operating System: Windows 10 64 Bit
  • Processor: Intel i5-6600 | Ryzen 5 2600X
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Video Card: GTX 970 | R9 Fury X 4GB VRAM
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/three-kingdoms-tech-effects-and-system-specs/

So the recommended spec only expects 45-55 fps on high at 1080p. (that lines up with the above reports of a desktop GTX 1060 being a bit below 60fps average). You'll want to try to keep FPS a bit higher than the 45-55 bracket most likely, as pretty graphics are harder to enjoy if they're stuttery or full of tearing.

I'm afraid what you're aiming for isn't possible with that budget in a laptop. TW games are extremely demanding.

You'll need better than a GTX 1050 ti to run TW 3 kingdoms smoothly at high settings, as above.

A GTX 1060 might be enough, if you are okay with less than 60fps some(most?) of the time.
A GTX 1060 laptop is ~£900+ at PCS, and I doubt it's going to be much cheaper anywhere else.
See: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/vyper-15/mQKSPHdjj0/

Could you go with a desktop?
You could get a decent desktop and the monitor and KB+M for £850

A desktop is something I haven't thought about tbh just been easier with a laptop with having kids etc. Just easy to get out and play.

How much would a desktop be?
Fps are not something i look at tbh lol

1) You want the framerate to be as close to 60 as possible, for as much of the time as possible.

Less than 60 frames per second (fps) makes for more stuttery gameplay and/or 'tearing' on the screen. And there's not much point having the settings turned up for high image quality if the gameplay feels really laggy and uneven.

2) You can get a desktop including keyboard, mouse, and monitor for £850 (£851 specifically, see the 2nd link in my post above) :). The monitor also has "adaptive sync" which can help smooth out framerate drops as well.

3) If you don't need a monitor - e.g. you already have one or would be gaming on your TV - you can get an even better spec for £850

4) Desktops are generally better value than laptops. As well as better performance for the money upfront, you can upgrade desktop components. So when Total War: Whatever comes out in 2022 and your PC's graphics card is struggling, you can just replace the graphics card. Whereas with a laptop, you'd have to buy a whole new laptop.

One other bit of info:

If you already own a laptop (even a pretty budget one) you can use Steam In Home Streaming https://store.steampowered.com/streaming/ .

This lets you run a game on your main gaming PC, but play it on any other PC. Including a low end laptop, because the PC is doing the heavy work of running the game - all the laptop is doing is letting you see and control it.

The image quality isn't always as good (think streaming video vs bluray; there's compression involved). But if your gaming PC is upstairs and you want to play the game in the livingroom, Steam In Home Streaming can let you whip out any old laptop and do that :)

It's not for everyone, and probably relies on decent wifi, but it's a possible nice-to-have and is worth being aware of.

That's the laptop im playing with now and on medium graphics i was getting 47fps but not sure how hot it was running.

I wish it was easy to change the graphics card on a laptop as there is nothing wrong with this one lol just the graphic card

I'm afraid there isn't.

Most laptops have the GPUs soldered on to the motherboard, and even if you could physically remove them, the system wouldn't support new ones. It's not like a desktop PC where you just unclip the GPU, pull it out, and clip a new one in.

The 965M was just one step below the 970M. The 1050 ti is only about equivalent to the 970M.

So you'd be spending ~£800 to get a laptop that 1) only nets you the performance level you could have bought for, what, £300 more back when you purchased your current laptop and b) still isn't capable of doing what you want it to (i.e. high settings, decent framerates)

With a 1050 ti, you'd be going from 47 fps on medium to about 60fps on medium...

With the desktop, you'd be looking at more like 60fps on high, or thereabouts.
