New laptop for work/gaming

Hi, I’m needing a new laptop for work to mainly use autoCAD & 3D models and general stuff like excel, emails etc. And also want to use it for casual gaming, probably some FPS shooters and action/RPG’s

I will be carrying it to and from work everyday I’m leaning more towards 17.3 but will a 15.6 really be that much more beneficial?

I’ve spec’d the below and it’s abit over my budget but any help or recommendations would be appreciated!

Hi mate,

We've a similar machine to this working with models here and it handles it no problem. Would also be pretty strong for gaming, I've changed the storage set up as the PCS drives are more than fast enough and very cheap but also went for the fastest OS/Boot drive that PCs have available instead of the Samsung 980 Pro.

For a laptop personally I'd always want the Gold Warranty and Dead Pixel Guarantee but it's up to yourself. There are some guys here who are really really good at the laptop stuff I just wanted to weigh in as we have a similar machine that's used for similar purposed that works pretty good

I will say stick with Windows 10 for now, having issues with Windows 11 and some of our modelling programs. Also Bullguard is terrible, Windows Defender is free and comes with Windows and does the job just as good as the others

Ok cool.

In that case I would basically go with the build you have posted originally but with one major change which is to add MX-4 thermal paste. Standard thermal paste is just no good in custom high performance laptops. I have also added a 1 year dead pixel guarantee because for for £19 quid you are saving yourself a lot of heart ache if you get a screen with dead pixels which are acceptable under ISO ISO-9241-302, 303, 305, 307:2008 Class 2 display equipment.

I personally would not recommend going with a PCS drive. Whilst they are absolutely fine if you are on an extremely tight budget, when you compare them to the Samsung drives the performance difference really is like night and day.

Much appreciated, any accessories you recommend? I will be needing a gaming mouse and possibly cooling stand?

So I am no expert on accessories I just know what works for me. Whether that conforms to the general consensus I do not know.

That being said, cooling stands do come with a benefit but as with anything you can disappear down a rabbit hole of loads of fans and RGB. I have a cooling stand with 5 fans and the fans seem to be absolutely pointless. I find that the space created under the laptop for fresh air seems to provide all the benefit and the fans are a bit of a gimmick. If I was to buy another one I would probably just buy a fan-less one.

PCS offer the CoolerMaster Notepal L2. No doubt it does an admirable job cooling laptops but it is also on the expensive side. You can get perfectly capable cooling stands from amazon for half the price.

In terms of gaming mice I have the Corsair M65 Pro RGB. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01D524BUY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1). I find it an excellent mouse with all the extra buttons and customisation options I need at a reasonable price. It feels premium and seems to be made very well.
