Hello,
For a better answer, we need your budget, your futur use-cases and fo you prefer 15" or 17" ?
(and maybe, does it have to be a laptop instead of a desktop ?)

I've swapped over to 3200mhz 32gb ram. keeping the single 512gb ssd for now. might add a secondary 1tb down the line. gone for the better cooling paste

Hello
I'm not sur that you'll need 32 gb of ram (it depend on the size of the file you'll create, so, it's up to you)
But you'll need the 2nd ssd
It's good use today To have your 1st Ssd for the os, your software and maybe the data you're currently using and the 2nd ssd for all your data
The reason behind this advice is if you have to clean install Windows or if you have any problems, your data will be safer in a 2nd ssd

Anyway, I hope you will be happy with your laptop ;)

thankyou. I'm still really new to this and want to be on the right track
Yeah, dropping a drive to buy one later is a really good idea if you want to get the budget down.

SSD's generally just get cheaper and cheaper as time goes on, they rarely increase (NAND shortages aside).

that's my plan. Will definitely keep an eye out for a good one. I've heard samsung 870 ssd are generally good options?

The 870 is a SATA SSD, that's the old style of SSD, same format as a 2.5" HDD drive.

This laptop takes NVME M2 drives which are a much smaller card format. The Evo 980 is an NVME M2 drive.

Just additionally, what's equally relevant is the speeds.

Anything on the SATA connection has a max speed both Read and Write of 600mbs.

On the NVMe connector which is on the PCIe lane rather than the SATA (much more direct connection to the CPU), speeds are far greater.

You have NVMe PCIe 3 - up to 3500mbs W / R
This laptop has PCIe4 - up to 8000mbs W / R

The Samsung Evo 970 Plus and 980 are PCIe 3 drives, on paper they look very much the same, but in actual performance, the 970 Plus is better (and likely cheaper) of around 2250 Read and 2000 write

The Samsung Evo 980 Pro are PCIe 4 drives.

So the 980 Pro is the one to go for if you want all out performance Up to 7,000 MB/s Read speeds and Up to 5100MB/s Write speeds.

After all that, I'm completely wrong, sincere apologies!!!!

This laptop only has PCIe 3 with the 11000 series Intel chips, not PCIe 4

So you wouldn't benefit from the speeds of the 980 pro unfortunately.
