New PC but slow Wifi

Hi!

Recently purchased a new PC from PCS. When I started it up for the first time, I ran a few tests and one of them was a simple internet speed test (by Google and Ookla). They both measured speeds of about 30-40mbps which was much different to the 250-300mbps I'm receiving on other devices in the house.

After contacting PCS, doing a bit of trouble shooting (e.g. netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /flushdns), and installing a new Tenda Wireless N300 PCIE network card... I'm getting the same 30-40mbps speeds.

I'm hoping to get some advice from the forums in addition to what's already taking place.

Can you hardwire to the router - what speeds does that give you ?

Tried the manual install with that driver and am getting the same results - 30-40mbps.

Also tried changing PCIe port - same results :(

Could the router be trying to connect at 5GHz ?

Might be worth swapping the channel to see if that helps anyway

I cant seem to find the option to do that through device manager.

I only see the following options.

Bandwidth options are 20_40mhz & 20 Mhz Only

Wireless Mode has 802.11b & 802.11b/g

Nothing about 2.4ghz/5ghz

It will be in the actual router settings - I have a BT one and it's quite "easy" although I am not sure whether it will be on other routers

I see that cable attached it works fine, so we know this is a wireless issue.

Please open an elevated PowerShell session and enter the following commands one at a time....

Get-NetAdapter | Out-File C:\Adapters.txt

Get-NetAdapterHardwareInfo | Out-File C:\Hardware.txt

Get-NetAdapterBinding | Out-File C:\Binding.txt

Get-NetAdapterAdvancedProperty | Out-File C:\AdvancedProp.txt

Get-NetAdapterPowerManagement | Out-File C:\Power.txt

You will then have five new text files with the above names in the root of your C: drive. Please upload these text files here. These will allow us to see exactly what settings are in your network adapters.

There is nothing catastrophically wrong in any of those WiFi settings.

Does another device (phone or tablet) get expected speeds connecting to the same access point and from the same location as the PC using the 2.4GHz band only? That wireless card only supports the 2.4GHz band - most phones and tables will use the 5GHz band if the access point supports it, so you'll have to configure the phone/tablet to use only the 2.4GHz band.

What options does the 'Wireless Mode' setting in the adapter advanced settings give you? Currently it's set to auto so the adapter might be dropping down to 802.11g, which would explain the 30-40Mbps speeds (802.11g is only 54Mbps max). If there is an 802.11n option then set it to that. If there is channel congestion (that was causing auto to drop down to 802.11g) then you might not connect at all at 802.11n - in which case do the following...

Do a site survey using the free version of inSSIDer3. That will show you which2.4GHz channel your access point/router is using and also which other local access points are using the same channel (and causing congestion/interference). I'd bet you're using either channel 1, 6 or 11 and I'd bet that 90% of all local access points are using those same channel. Look for the channel that has the least number of other access point son it - if there is a choice then look for the one that also has the least number of access points on the channels to either side. Then change your access point/router to use that channel.

A better solution, since you're a major WiFi user, might be to upgrade to the (much better) AX200 adapter and just use 5GHz.

Try changing the channel on the router/access point, your problem may well just be congestion and/or interference. Use inSSIDer3 to find the least busy channel and switch the router to that channel. All devices will disconnect from 2.4HGz when you do that (so check that nobody else is using 2.4GHz at the time) but they will seamlessly reconnect. This is definitely worth trying before you spend any money. :)

Thanks for the help @ubuysa! I tried channels 1,6,11 and I haven't seen any speed differences unfortunately.

After installing a TPlink T4E I'm getting 300mbps speeds. It should be noted that the Tenda WirelessN300 cannot reach the stated speeds - At least on my 2 cards and configuration.
