New PC

Just waiting on my new pc which I think has gone into pre production now.

Here's the spec below. I'll be using it for design software (photoshop, blender 3d etc) as I'm a freelance designer. In 6 months I'll probably look at adding another 12gb of ram and eventually another another GTX470. I've gone for this card as I'll be using it to render 3d scenes and animations using cuda streams which can render in minutes instead of hours compared to cpu's. I'll post some pics when I get my new machine. Can't wait.

Case
COOLERMASTER COSMOS 1000 SILVER SILENT CASE
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-950 (3.06GHz) 4.8GTs/8MB Cache
Motherboard

Other wise very nice:p

Very poor 470!? The GTX 470 is still an excellent graphics card and should perform well - plus it's on special offer at the moment. The i7 950 is also a fantastic processor but as Stappa says, your order is still at the stage where it can be changed so you might want to consider a Sandy Bridge PC, built around Intel's latest lineup. Consider the following:

Case
CORSAIR GRAPHITE SERIES™ 600T GAMING CASE ***NEW***
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i5-2500 Quad Core (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache) + HD Graphics

Memory (RAM)
8GB SAMSUNG DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB)
Graphics Card
1280MB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX570 - 2 DVI,mHDMI - DirectX® 11, 3D Vision Ready
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
80GB Intel® X25-M 2.5" SSD (34nm / upto 250MB/sR | 70MB/sW)***SPECIAL***
2nd Hard Disk
1TB WD CAVIAR GREEN WD10EARS, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive

Gtx 470 is a great card, but I'm starting to hate intel and nvidia becuase they are releasing brand new stuff two months after I got my pc. They should have released all this things in October!!!

Hi chaps, thanks for the replies and suggestions.

@ Stappa - Unfortunately the software I'll be using doesn't support ati cards and only uses nvidia cuda. I think the 470 will be more than enough for what I will be using it for. Because I'll be rendering using cuda, I couldn't really justify the extra money for the 570 which is obviously a better card but off the top off my head I think it has 480 cuda cores and the 470 has 448, so not a massive difference for the extra cost.

@ Tom - That's's a good spec you've put together there! Great price as well on PC Specialist, I've not really seen anywhere that can compete witht these prices.

@ bg92 - I know it's really annoying trying to keep up!

Don't forget to get the Silver Warranty for £5, adds 1 year warranty as opposed to the 1 month :p
Otherwise Tom's is a great spec :)

Gtx 470 is a great card, s !

Unfortunately the 470/480 were one of the biggest tech flops of 2010 lol(Expensive, hot&power hungry)

Ati's marketing department even quoted "that gamers with fermi cards were being raided by the police under the assumption that the blazing heat and high power usage were signs of an indoor cannabis farm" LOL:D

Nothing like that happened to me, btw they are hot but not to the extent that they act like heating in your house, btw the gtx470 is not expensive now. and who cares about difference of 30w in consumption of power of a gpu.

Biggest tech flop? Then why does my GTX470 eat through everything I throw at it? Plus I've saved a fortune in central heating since I bought it! Yes it does get hot and uses more power than a lot of cards but not enough to worry about and it IS a great card and very powerful.

Exactly who cares about power consumption of a gpu

oh wait there is someone who would

As vegetarian I must protest! just use a plastic fish so that no one is harmed :)

As MickyG said choose the extra warranty for a fiver, forgot to select it - sorry.

Slight overstatement! They might not look quite as good when put up against the 570/580 but at the time of release the 480 was one of the most powerful cards available. While it's true that they were hot, power hungry monsters (and heat + power savings are always a bonus) they were far from a failure. Plus alot of the reviews were based around the factory stock card. These are never as good as the modified versions.

Yes I do care about power consumption! which is why I chose a Caviar Green drive, a HD6870 and an incredibly efficient power supply with no intention of crossfiring (it's never stressed at all).

btw I didn't mean to sound offensive, however I appreciate your attitude towards being ''green'' its a good thing, although your are not fully ''green'' :p

Ha ha ha! You guys are funny.

I'm not bothered about the heat or consumption, will be a plus as I work in my attic office which can get cold. Plus I will probably be using my current older quad core as an extra machine to render on when I need to. One of the 3d render engines I use can utilise the cores from both machines so with hyperthreading enabled on the new machine I will have 12 cores to throw at rendering 3d artwork. One of the reasons I didn't go for a 6 core machine, well and the ridiculous price!

I actually went for the higher cover at £69 because this will be my main tool for my work and helps pay the bills.

Thanks for the advice and help guys.

No offence taken :) and I know my CPU isn't particularly efficient but Bulldozer isn't here yet :( and if that was a reference to Nvidia then they aren't better for being green lol
