Hi @Hammy1010

More info is always better, good to understand that you plan on doing some video editing and gaming but if you could help with the below it'll help us refine any suggestions.

What is your budget for this computer?
How much did the above cost?
Can you include the configurable link to the above spec?
What monitor are you planning on using with it?

I'd always suggest silver warranty at the very least.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

My budget is around £2,000. This includes the pc, a monitor upgrade (if needed), printer and the peripherals.
The above came to a cost of £1,400.
The configurable link is-https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-gen3-pc/bdzGsYQW9A/
My current monitor is a HP 144hz and 1ms 24 inch.- HP 24x 144Hz Full HD Gaming Monitor (1920 x 1080) NVIDIA G-Sync & AMD FreeSync compatible, 1ms Response time, built in speakers (1 DP, 1 HDMI) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07SS5QLWQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_mKeBFbH5DHAB7.

AMD CPUs like the fastest possible RAM so a change there would be well worth it. The 4TB drive you have chosen is only 5400rpm, not a big issue for a storage drive but you will notice how slow it is, the 3TB is 7200rpm and worth considering, or 2 x 2TB HDDs. Plus, as Steaky said, the Silver Warranty for a fiver is worth it when spending a lot on a rig.

When you Uni work, what specifically? I'd of thought that you dont need the overclocked AMD chips (there are guys in the forums that can explain better than me). Is this the max budget? If the PC is being used for mostly gaming and a little bit of uni work then you could drop the CPU down further to save some cash for further improvements.

You got 32GB of low speed RAM, again is there a specific program that you're running that needs this? I'd put your cash towards the higher frequency stuff.

Do you need the machine now? As you say the new 3070's are on the way next month I believe. Waste of money putting the AMD GPU in there. What resolution is the monitor you have now? 1080p, 1440p or 4K?

Intel SSD's arent exactly the best tbh. Sack off Bullguard

You'll need @SpyderTracks , @Nursemorph or one of the Mod team to have a better look than me

Post above is correct on all counts 👍

AMD chips have a frequency boost which acts as built in overclocking, attempting to clock them further can actually hamper performance. And there are long term reliability issues with the Intel M.2 drives so the PCS variant would be a better one.

It’s a wise move to spend a few pennies extra on the PSU and get the RMx version, fully modular and semi passive so fan will only kick in when it’s under load.

Unless your uni work involves higher end editing this spec should be more than enough to cope with what you can throw at it, left off the GPU as we don’t know what resolution your monitor is yet ✌

Hi

My university doesn't involve any editing, although I do enjoy putting together the odd vlog or travel video. I am also a sports coach which could include lots of low level programming eg Microsoft excel.

My current monitor is a HP 1920 x 1080 gaming monitor with a cheap 1080 2nd monitor, should I upgrade to 1440?

I am waiting a month or so to see what happens during the releases, I do love gaming and would love to take it to the next level and possibly stream in the future. Should I go 3070 or 3080, or stick with the 5700?

What should I be looking for in the cases? Does it matter?

Don’t go for the AMD GPU, whilst their chips are excellent, their graphics cards are known to have some driver issues. You’ll be better off sticking with an Nvidia card.

If you want to take your gaming to the next level you’ll definitely want to go 1440p, the 3070 will be wasted on your current monitors. The 3070 would match up nicely with a 1440p 144Hz ultrawide, the upcoming 3060Ti would be for a standard sized 1440p 144Hz monitor.

The CPU I put in my spec for you would have you covered for your uni work, gaming and any future streaming 👍

For a case, you want good airflow. Hugely important and so often overlooked when people build a system.

Will look at a monitor upgrade, how important is response time? Currently having a 1ms monitor will going for a 1440p 4ms monitor for example good or bad?

Anything under 5ms response is generally regarded to be fine, unless you’re a competitive gamer. If you stuck with 1080p you’d be golden with the GTX 1660 Super, maybe the RTX 2060 at a push. The monitor is going to bottleneck anything higher.
