New to Desktops, what do you think of this build?

Before reading through the build, just a few things to note:

1. I'm coming from a laptop, so not 100% on desktop unwritten rules etc, so please be kind when berating my build haha.

2. I'll also need to buy a monitor but will do that through another vendor.

3. I'm trying to keep the cost as close to €2000 as possible (oh yes, I'm based in Ireland) but can go over a small bit.

4. Anyone know any good estimates for 3070 wait times? Just any ball park as I don't have any information myself.

The build:

What's your budget for the monitor? What are you looking at resolution/refresh wise. The 3070 may not be the best fit, which could save a ton.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've heard that liquid cooling isn't worth it, am I wrong?

Thanks for the reply :) I already have a BenQ XL2411P as a main monitor, so the other monitor I reference would just be any old one for a second monitor really, should have specified that sorry! Considering my current monitor is 1080p, that's the resolution I'm aiming for, but I'm really looking to hit non stop 144FPS+ on high settings on latest games at 1080p (Apex, possibly Battlefield 6 once we know more). So I picked the 3070 as it also opens the door to good 1440p gaming in the future.

Ok this is what I'd do, I've taken keyboard & webcam out as you can probably get better deals elsewhere I've also changed the GPU to the 6700XT to stay within budget, this card is fine for 1440p which i assume is where you're aiming at.

I would save the money to be honest. The 2060 has you covered for high refresh 1080p. If you want to be really safe the 3060Ti would more than meet your requirements, it would have high refresh 1440p covered as well.

The 3070 is a real waste of cash IMO.

I would also never recommend future proofing a GPU, it just isn't possible. Get what you need for the next 6 months, it'll all have changed completely by that time anyway and the money saved can be put towards the next option.

Hi there!

I was here about a month ago I think, with a similar enough build. Since then, some things have changed both externally and internally, so I'm back with a vengeance :)

The build is below obviously, but here are the details about my siutations:
1. Currently on a 1080p 144Hz monitor, although the plan is to be on a 1440p 144Hz monitor by Christmas (birthday upcoming etc) + my part time job will get me there eventually, hence the 3070, as I'm looking for 1440p 144fps by end of year.
2. Storage is easily expandable as time goes on, hence I've chosen for a singular 1TB fast M.2S SSD. Will add more SSD's as needed in the future.
3. My internship (as a CS student) is making this possible, and I've vowed that in total, I will only spend max 30% of my internship net pay on discretionary. Including other discretionary like clothes etc, that leaves my budget for this pc at around €2,500 (based in Ireland btw), but the closer to €2,000 is obviously better haha.
4. Since I'm coming from a laptop, I'll be externally buying a keyboard and webcam (for work), and have already priced these at about €60 due to friend discounts etc.

Okay, onto the particular sticking points I'd love professional (or at least seasoned haha) advice on:
Case: Is this case okay? Really don't care about looks all that much, but this one looks cool to me, I've done a bit of research on it and it seems okay, but would just love a second opinion.

Motherboard/Ram: Coming from only ever having laptops, all I know about motherboards is that they connect everything together haha, please don't kill me! Tbh, in my head the motherboard choice is split between the current one spec'd, or the ASUS TUF Gaming B550-Plus if I choose to go with 3200MHz ram. Based on my ram research, I've seen that going from 3200 -> 3600 can net you around 5-10fps on average. This obviously appeals to me, but I'm just wondering is there some other benefits to this more expensive motherboard that is needed for this speed of ram?

Power Supply: The site tells me I only actually need a 650W PSU based on my configuration, but at the risk of being sent to the shadow realm by r/pcmasterrace, is 750W enough of a 'future proof'. Is it worth it to go even higher to maybe 850W so that when I update the GPU/CPU in the future, my PSU will be able to cope, or am I overthinking it?

Processor Cooling: The last time I was here, everyone who made a change to my build suggested the current cooler I have in the spec below. Honestly, again coming from a laptop, cooling is sort of foreign to me haha. I've heard the horror stories of water cooling, but then again, coming from laptop, I'm sick of fan noise :cautious:. Is this a good cooler (and will it be able to handle my possible future CPU?), and if not, which is better? I do appreciate how much of an idiot I probably sound like right now, sorry haha!

Fairly confident on the rest, thanks for reading this essay, and can't wait to read about how badly I've done this!

Hiya, welcome back. I’ve merged your questions into your original thread to get the timeline of your build all in one place.

Case is fine, I have it myself. It’s a smaller case than some of the gargantuan models which suits my wee desk.

The B550 gaming board will be suitable for the processor, the X570 model isn’t necessary.

I don’t think a slightly higher frequency RAM would necessarily get you 10 more frames per second, it tends to be in editing tasks that you’d net gains. I’m gaming on 3200MHz without issue.

Definitely worth going high on the PSU, covers you for the future.

The MasterLiquid 240 is an excellent budget AIO, we have forum members that have been using them for years with very few problems reported. Would it handle a future CPU? We’d have know more about the CPU to be able to answer that.

You’ve got a solid build, I’d only make a couple of tweaks. You can actually have a very good storage situation now without having to spend much more. And drop BullGuard, it’s likely to cause more problems than it’ll solve. Windows Defender will look after you. Silver warranty is also valuable peace of mind for the extra few pennies. Here’s what I’d do…

First off, thanks for re-organising the thread.

Secondly, thanks for the kind response! Always appreciated from a n00b like me.

I really like how you went about solving my storage issue, huge ups on that mate!

In your build, you kept the 3600MHz ram, did you mean to do this? Seems like you suggested otherwise in your answers.

Overall, super happy you had a look, looks like I'm getting way more bang for my buck for like, an extra 20 quid :)

No problemo, happy to help. If you’ve got the budget, by all means keep the 3600MHz, it’s not going to cause any downsides. If you like shiny things, the RGB version currently the exact same price…

Thanks for all the help again. I know it's a long shot, but you wouldn't happen to have any knowledge of typical wait times (especially regarding the 3070) if I were to order today would you?

3070 stocks haven’t been too bad, think people are waiting around a month for those 👍
