New Workstation

I have bought several machines from PC Specialists before however this time I am struggling to get through to an adviser. The attached spec is to replace a previous PC Specialist machine. I tend to work on large spreadsheets, have many programs open on two VDU's. I am also now doing a lot more Skype type communication (surprise surprise!) and a lot of internet cloud based stuff. Our office had fibre quick internet connectivity.

Any useful comments would be appreciated, I was wondering about another SSD (say 500 gig) instead of the STAT drive I have chosen.

Thank you so much for spending the time to give me an alternative. I am quite happy to follow your suggestion but I have to say SSD's have made a huge difference to the speed of machines I have put them in why a SATA 2 TB drive as opposed ton an SSD for the operating system and a 1TG drive for storage (mainly backups which then go to Drop box) ? I am an Intel man but appreciate you probably get much betetr value from AMD. Thanks again

The OS drive is an SSD, but an M2 which is vastly faster than a SATA SSD (10 times faster).

The HDD is for storage and that won't benefit from being an SSD.

Intel is seriously way behind Intel now, Intel are really really crap compared, and Intel won't be able to catch up for at least 2 years, but likely much more than that.

Thanks for the explanation I am nearly there!

Does the wireless INTEL PCE Card include a 1,000 LAN port? I don’t really need Wi-Fi as we are all wired but for £18 that’s fine as long as I retain the wired LAN port as well.

From what you say I miss read the quote the first drive isn’t the first storage drive it’s the 1st M.2 SSD Drive which is a 500GB SSD. That makes perfect sense then.

The only change I have made is to buy windows professional and choose Google Chrome. if you could clarify bthe LAN I am good to go!

LAN ports are part of the motherboard and is on all motherboards. If you don't need wifi then drop the card entirely.

Yes, that's correct. M2 drives have replaced standard SSD's, they're a different form factor and significantly faster as they go direct onto the PCIe lanes rather than through the SATA lanes.

What reason do you need pro? It's not like previous versions of windows where it provides loads of extra features, the only feature it adds is the ability to connect to a domain.

The BSOD Doctor
I do wish Microsoft would rename their Windows offerings. Home is ok, as are Education and Enterprise, but people see 'Pro' as being something for the more technically able home user and that's just not the case. I'd rather they called it 'Business' instead.

We do still run on a domain with a server and all of the old school stuff!

I got a suggestion as I ordered, can you comment please?

We've checked your specification for compatibility. Please consider our advice below before proceeding:

  • The motherboard you have selected does not support PCIe 4.0. Due to this the speed of your SSD will be limited to PCIe 3.0.
  • You have selected a 550W power supply, but based on our calculations you actually only need a 350W power supply. We have calculated your specification to require around of 320W power including a 20% allowance. Although it is not a mandatory requirement to select a lower wattage power supply, doing so will save you money and the last thing we'd like to do is over charge you!
  • We note that you have selected an M.2/PCI-E SSD drive and a mechanical hard drive under the primary hard disk drive option. Please confirm whether you would like your operating system (OS) to be installed on the SSD drive or on the mechanical hard drive:
Install the OS on the M.2/PCI-E SSD Install the OS on the mechanical hard drive (not recommended)
Would seem better to save on the power supply and spend it on a board that can support quicker drive?

I assume no one bothers with CDs nowadays as everything comes through the net.

You've selected an older motherboard which won't be able to power the M2 drive which is PCIe 4. Only X570 boards have PCIe 4

Stick with the 550W PSU, it's worth it to have the higher rated PSU and headroom for expansion in the future.

You want the OS on the M2 drive.
