No Such Thing As A Free Lunch

After purchasing a laptop from PCS I received an email asking for my feedback on the Laptop and their service

In return the email said I would receive a Free 8Gb pen drive

Sounds good to me I have had no problem with the service / Laptop and went to leave feedback

Until I read the small print - I then emailed PCS but have had no reply, so I will post my email to them here so you all can see my problem

Regards Steve

"Hi

I am most pleased to get an offer of a free 8GB pen drive just for giving you good feed back

But as Computer Specialists you should know better than to get people to join all these websites to get a gift and to give you feedback

I have never heard of ciao and would not like to use them

And I would never use or join Facebook

I cannot imagine how much junk mail I would receive if I was to use these sites

I will quite happily give you good feedback as I am well pleased with my new laptop

But on your own website or in your forums

I feel here there is no such thing as a free lunch

I feel you have let yourself down by getting people to join these websites

Please feel free to reply

Regards"

I think this is better suited to the feedback section, so I moved it for you. Hopefully it will get more relevant discussion in this section.

Regarding your points about signing up to websites just to leave feedback, I'm sure you would not receive any junk mail as long as you checked the relevant boxes on any signup forms you complete. I submitted a review (cant remember the site now) but I didn't even have to input any personal details, just mailed the link to PCS and got my free pen drive. I know PCS ask people to leave reviews in all sorts of places, how long ago did you mail them? It can take a few days for them to respond to emails so they could get back to you early next week. They would probably accept a review left on the forums as I know some people are asked to leave reviews here anyway.

It's a free choice, you don't have to do it by any means but I can assure you it is as close to a free lunch as your going to get anywhere.

I think you are more likely to receive spam etc. just by the very fact your email address exists than by entering it as part of a feedback process.

Of course there are nefarious sites out there, but even Facebook isn't evil (well, not for that reason :) ).

At the end of the day, and I say this from a professional point of view, if you do receive emails you don't want (not even spam, just ones you don't want), what is so hard about pressing "Delete"?

Just my opinion :)

I left a review on Ciao after getting my laptop (I received my USB drive not long after) however it was denounced as being more PCS spam by some of the regulars who gave it the lowest rating and because I didn't have positive rating I couldn't respond to them.... Not a very good review site IMO.

Cheers for your replies guys

Glad to see you all realised I wasn't winging on just making a comment

Anyway I've ordered a USB drive 4 x bigger and it was not expensive so I'm over it now

And I'm still happy with PCS service and my new laptop

Cheers again for your replies

I also received an email offering me a complimentary 8GB pen drive. I was about to go and give a positive review until I saw a requirement was to "LIKE us on Facebook". Like Guernsey I have no intention of joining Facebook so won't be participating in this process. It's a shame really as I am happy with my PC and would recommend PCS without hesitation.
I'm battling against the tide here but one of my pet hates these days is being continually pestered by organisations to 'like' them on Facebook!

If you want the drive, drop em an email asking if you could perhaps leave a review on the forums, or perhaps another site. I'm sure they would allow it.

PCS need to get their name out, companies like PCS have to do it and it just so happens almost everyone has Facebook so a simple 'like' is an easy way for people to grab a free USB drive and it helps out PCS.

I have seen others saying people shouldn't be incentivised at all to leave reviews, it just encourages people to leave positive reviews to get a free gift. But hardly anyone would bother if they didn't get a gentle reminder, its still entirely voluntary and if you don't want to do it your free not to. But if your happy with the product and are happy to leave a review then go for it.
