Intending to use a SSD for Windows & program files only on Windows 8
Backing up either to a separate regular hard drive or to a USB 3.0 external hard drive.

Which would you recommend and why.

Neither. I use Macrium Reflect (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx) because it's free. It does full image backups and restores quickly and without fuss. Their emergency restore CD/DVD is based on WinPE so you also get a neat recovery environment when you boot it as well. Been using it for years and it's never let me down - and I do a lot of restores too (don't ask why)!

BTW. Norton Ghost is being discontinued as of April this year, see http://uk.norton.com/ghost/

Hi,

When I upgraded to Win 8, Norton Ghost wasn't compatible. After checking on the support pages, it stated that Norton were working on upgrading it, however it didn't have a release date so I went for Acronis and I have to admit i'm happy I did.
I regularly had problems with Ghost and Win 7 becoming unusable if I hadn't backed up for a while, and had to delete old backups and reinstall using an iso image.
Acronis however will happily perform a full or incremental backup no matter how long it has been since I last ran it. I have also completely recovered my machine using Acronis after I stupidly went a bit too far with my "tinkering" and screwed it up. I have 2 internal SSD's and a hybrid HDD in an optical caddy and Acronis restored all 3 perfectly

Hope this helps.
