Nova 15.6 Overheating CPU

So thermal pads 2.0m are too thick. 1.0m that were used i think were too think and not making good/full contact, Replaced with Artic Thermals 1.5m pads (order 2.0, 1.5 and 1.0 to be sure). was able to crank a game up to full everything and not have screen go black.. Other symptoms i started getting was screens going blank and coming back, any GPU accelerated application having performance issues depending on task.

So after thermal pad + paste replace things are looking positive for the first time. Will update again on weekend after had a few days trying to play games and run benchmarks see if it has solved the issue finally for me.
Check how the temps are as well, recommend using Hwinfo (y)

So finally had time to sit and play games again. sadly to play games i need to turn settings down mostly. Ifi push the GPU to hard whole system overheats and shutsdown. as long as GPU stays below 80c im good. Ive changed Thermal Pads, repasted, done the required CPU bios update etc....

Symtoms:
1: Turn on any game that will make the GPU work hard.
2: Wait for GPU temp to reach 80c+
3: Externals and Laptop screens all go blank.
4: Physically turn laptop off and on again to use again.

Idle Temps:
CPU 55-60c
GPU 47-50c

I'm starting to think i have a bad GPU. or there is something else going on. but frankly short of returning the laptop not sure what else to do.

Those GPU temperatures are definitely not ok. You shouldn't even be reaching 80 degrees with games unless you have crazy high ambient temperatures or restricted airflow.
If I were you the first thing I would do would be to repaste. It is very likely that something went wrong when repasting the gpu. If you go ahead with this can you take some pictures of GPU so we can see how the TIM was spread and maybe some photos of the thermal pads. Its important to make sure that your thermal pads are making good contact with the VRMs.

Edit: Its been a while since I've been on this thread so I forgot that you had already posted a lot of information about your problem. Maybe its worth taking a more systematic approach in troubleshooting and only changing a thing at a time to see what helps. I would really urge you to give repasting another go and posting some pictures of the previous paste/re-padding job here.

My GPU reaches 80 sometimes, depending on the game (RDR2 basically), but does not go above that, though.

From what I know, the thermal limit is 85-86, so reaching 80 is not that much of a problem, and I would say that it's kind of expected when you pair it with a 12 cores CPU that definitely should run hot. But it should not shut down because of it, as the thermal throttling should kick in first.

I found on my laptop ( and some others) the GPU and CPU don't make good contact with the heatsink.
This can be resolved by 0.5mm shims or 0.5mm washers.

However check after you repaste and tighten, remove the heatsink again and have a peak at the heatsink. See if you have any clean spots.

If you do try the above suggestions, also use more thermal paste than perhaps you would usually. Obviously be mindful if you're using a conductive paste.

I would echo @demon28 and repaste. I repasted for the first time ever and did a poor job (using Arctic MX-4) and my GPU was hitting 80-85 degrees.

I then changed to Kryonaut and learnt how to repaste and now I struggle to even reach 75 degrees, most of the time I'm around 71-72 (with full utilization.)

Over 10 degrees due to thermal paste..Who knew??? (Clearly not me!)

Also I bought a cheap stand that elevates the machine around 150mm at the back end so it can get all that good air. That helped massively (again thanks @demon28)

That is true, a hot CPU can influence GPU temps as well as it is a shared heat sink, I did not think about that. I have never reached 80C even when I was in a hot room with the windows shut playing demanding titles. Out of personal preference I try to keep the GPU under 80C but 80 is still not a dangerous temperature Im probably a bit paranoid. Anyway, the 2070 gpus tend to run a bit hotter than the 2060 but are still relatively cool GPUS. They are not known to thermal throttle/thermal shutdown so there is a definitely an issue here. Lets wait for @MathewEvan449 to get back to us. There are plenty things we could look at that might resolve the issue or at least point us to the culprit of the issue

I repasted again, this is what it looked like when i took the heatsink off.

After repasting. Idle temp for GPU is 46c. running CyberPunk 2077 set to Ray Tracing: Medium GPU will eventually settle around 85-86c. This is will the GPU fan kicking in around 77c to full speed and staying there. I've ordered some new thermal paste as I'm now out and some thermal grizzly thermal pads. Also ordered one of those laptop cooling stands to add some extra airflow.

Edit: CPU sits at 70c while GPU sits around 85-86c

Unlike when i first had issues with the CPU spiking to 90c, and prior to replacing the thermal pads having the screen going black on me (suspect NVRAM overheating). Now GPU seems like it is just running hot. but 80c+ temps on the GPU feels very hot.

It is settling at 85-86 because it is thermal throttling. 86° is the temperature limit of the GPU.

Don't remember if I asked you this already, but which power profile are you using on Control Center? My GPU never gets above 80°, but then my CPU is a lot cooler than yours, so it could be that your CPU might be heating up your GPU due to the shared heatpipes. Entertainment mode is preferred for heavy and long tasks (like gaming), while high performance should be used for short and very demanding tasks (like benchmarking and short video rendering).

You could try playing cyberpunk on "quiet mode" in control center to check how much that helps with the GPU temps. The power profiles only change CPU TDP and nothing will be changed on the GPU side, so I know that you are going to lose a bit of FPS on quiet mode, but at least you can see if your GPU alone has temperature issues or if that only happens when it's paired with the also hot CPU.

Based on that, we can think about manual OC & UV the CPU or GPU to control the temperatures without losing too many FPS, if you're comfortable on going through that route.

I don't think the issue is CPU related. as that sits happily at 70c while the GPU is climbing. I Suspect the heat sink is not making a good enough contact with the GPU core. but that is all i can think of. But i have to wait for new pads and more paste so i can give it a really good clean and try again. CPU overall seems happy. Could just be current thermal pads are too thick preventing cooling making a good contact? is my current theory hence ordering different thermal pads.

CyberPunk 2077 - Ray Tracing: Medium
Quite mode: CPU: 73c - GPU 64-70c - FPS 20
Entertainment mode: CPU: 72c - GPU 83-86c - FPS 60

Yeah, your temps look quite good on the CPU side, even on entertainment mode. So you're right, if your CPU is under control then it indeed looks like you have something weird going on with either the thermal paste, thermal pads or mounting pressure.

I found turning all FANs including CPU to maximum. The GPU sits around 79c in Entertainment mode. I think pressure + better thermal pads (to allow better pressure) might be the answer in my case. Also expect the cooling pad due to arrive today will have a small but noticeable impact.

Finally update to my saga. Seems there was a fault with my laptop had to RMA it. Seems to be NVRAM related. RMAd it 5 weeks ago, there is a queue so hoping ill get a laptop back in a months time. 2 months without the laptop i paid for feels super long but guess atleast can be fixed finally.

Thanks for the update, and please keep us posted on the next steps. Interested to know if they still have spare parts for the Nova, which I think they should, but just wanted to confirm that ;)

It is unfortunate that you had the issue, but better to have it while under warranty so you don't need to spend money to fix it (y)

Week 6 after RMA now. So I'm hoping that after 6 weeks of nothing PCSpecialist will finally give me a eta or something, as they said 5-6 weeks before someone even looks at it when I done the RMA.. Will update again when PCSpecialist get in contact again with something.

Week 7; Finally being looked at. issue replicated only happens when laptop is under heavy load :) first positive step in a while. will update once get final update and know 100% what the issue was, suspect as they change the motherboard completely was a hardware fault.

If they could replicate the issue, then it is indeed a good sign! Fingers crossed for it to be fixed and returned to you soon. I can't imagine how bad it would be to stay without my laptop for 7 weeks :(

Using my old PCSpecalist laptop in the mean time.
( Clevo P65_P67SG ) : Defiance 15" / i7-4870HQ / 32GB Ram DDR3 / 980M GTX / PremaMod Bios

So atleast i can play some games and do some stuff.

So this might be my final update. Had the laptop back now for 2 week easily.
Effectively the issue was a bad eprom flash, suspect when my laptop was shipped missing a BIOS update. the one i was given was also faulty.
The laptop as a whole is running alot cooler and no more black screens.

So Symptoms:
After sustained high usage the screen will go blank and whole laptop will be unresponsive. This can be from multiple VMs or just a recent Game

Replication:
If you run two benchmarks at the same time will cause screen to go black due to high CPU usage.

Solution:
Reflash the eprom/bios with a new working version.

Current BIOS Version: 1.07.07TPCS - Date: 06/03/2020
Max TDP: 65.0W
