Nova with 1440p 144hz refresh rate

Hello All,

I'm thinking about to buy a Nova for myself mostly for gaming, in this case mostly Destiny 2.
I'm looking for Ryzen 9 and RTX2070.
I was wondering if with this configuration would be possible to run demanding games like Destiny 2 at 1440p with144hz refresh rate.
Or should I go look for Vyper III for 2070 Super, maybe 2080?
And yes, I'm looking to buy a 27" monitor with 144hz-165hz.
Thanks

@EduOli I think you forgot to add your spec :) - there's more to a spec than just the CPU and GPU

If you could tell us your budget as well as providing the configurable link with the spec that would be really helpful

When you say "mostly gaming", how much non-gaming is there?

The reason I ask is you have gone WAY overboard with the RAM. With it being a laptop which tend to be upgraded less often I think 32GB would be fine as the budget allows. Normally we would recommend 16GB so 32 is a bit outwith the norm. 64GB is very extreme and would be way past any sort of gaming use.

With the CPU I would tend to look towards the 3700X (or 3800 if it's available) as the 3900 is a low-fat version of the X series. It offers more processing power overall but will have far less gaming potential (single threaded performance).

Everything else looks great and should be ideally suited to a 1440p 144hz monitor.

Hi!
Thanks for your reply!
Something around 3h-4h/day playing and when needed I use my own machine to do some data processing.

Should this be a better option? Just because Recoil has better video card options than Nova.
Another question... Nova does not support RTX 2070 Super?

If it's mostly for gaming, I would say yes. It's also more portable and should have better battery life.

Only thing I'd change is dropping the BullGuard Security, which isn't very good and has been known to cause problems.

I don't think they are comparing apples with apples. From what I understand the Nova has the DTR 2070 while the Recoil has the Laptop 2070 Super. There won't be a lot in it for GPU power so I think you can completely forget the "Super" aspect of it. I think the DTR 2070 will actually be more powerful, paired with the 3700X it'll certainly be a more powerful overall system. That all being said, the Recoil is going to be more portable and more "laptop" like. The Nova is a DTR chassis so this has to be taken into consideration.

Ditto on Bullguard.

The Nova is an awesome looking machine and has plenty of grunt, however book in for a visit to the chiropractor if you intend to move it around. I have the Intel-esk alternative and i weighs a tonne! However I knew this when buying and it doesn't move from where i plonked it months ago.

Thanks for all replies guys!
Really helpful!
I changed the specs to reduce what was an overkill like the 64gb RAM haha! I knew was overkill... but big numbers are soooo nice!
About the video card, I was kind worried the RTX 2070 from Nova being worse than Super one and not delivering enough power to run nice in a 1440p monitor. I don't care about running in Ultra quality, High is enough for me. As mentioned, Nova is a totally different type of laptop with hardware a bit more powerful than a regular laptop.

Anyway, if your like and are looking for a new monitor, I just got one from Dell:

Good reviews and they have a almost £100 discount.

Cheers

I've got the 2070 in my Nova and it's running a 32in 1440p 165hz monitor fine, especially if you're not planning on any ultra settings. I've had Shadow of the Tomb Raider banchmarks on 1440p ultra settings and full RTX/DLSS maxed out. I get avg FPS around 48-52 which seems to be around the ballpark for a 2070.

That's actually not true for the GPU. While the nova has a desktop CPU, the GPU is still laptop - 115W limited. However, your comments make total sense on the CPU side of things, as a desktop 3700x is far better than a laptop 10875H on multi-core performance and similar on single-core

I also don't agree with that, but it all depends on the point of view. The nova weights around the same as my 4-year-old Dell Gaming 7559, both being 15.6". So, since the Nova is smaller on most dimensions (it's just thicker), it actually makes it more portable than a lot of older gaming laptops ;). You cannot compare the Nova with the newer thin and light laptops, as the latter are in a whole different dimension, price-wise (more expensive) and performance-wise (slower) :ROFLMAO:

Do you have any references for this?

I know that it's a "laptop" card, and there will be limitations, but I was under the impression that the Nova version was the 2070 Full Fat laptop edition, similar to the GTX1080 in my Octane III. The RTX2070 Super in the Recoil, I believe, is the RTX2070m..... Super.... with the "m" now being dropped with all mobile cards.

I might have misread your post, but if you are talking about desktop 2070, that is not the case here. The nova indeed has the full-fat 2070, but for laptops (topping at 115W). It's still a bit far from the desktop 2070 and more on par with the 2060 desktop.

This is the Nova's 2070 GPU:

Think you've misunderstood what I meant. There are no full fat desktop cards in laptops, I don't think there ever have been that I can think of. They are always cut down versions in the DTR class. They are generally called "notebook" models. The DTR cards, however, tend to be more powerful than the standard offerings.

What I was saying is that the Nova spec 2070 is likely to have more performance than the Recoil 2070 Super as it's unlikely to be at the same level of GPU, even though the naming suggests it would be. It's more than likely the true laptop model which would previously have been an "m" class card. GTX980m for example.

The way that I differentiate the mobile GPUs nowadays is by the max wattage that they can be provided, as the chips and memory are usually the same across all GPUs from the same model. For example, you can find laptops with the RTX 2060 that could vary from 80 to 115W (not even mentioning max-q, which will go even lower), with the nova having the 115W top of the class version. If that's what you're saying, you're right. But I don't think the same behaviour happens with the 2070, as all the models I've seen have 115W (apart from max-q that could have 80 or 90W)

I could be wrong but I think 1455mhz is faster than the 2070 "mobile". I find it really difficult to discern between them all now, the line is far too grey IMO. Having to benchmark your system to get a score to figure out the power of your GPU isn't tennis IMO.

The 1455 boost clock is because the Nova is using the 2020 refreshed version of the 2070 mobile, which makes things even more confusing :ROFLMAO:

The "normal"/old 2070 mobile does indeed have a slower boost clock (1440) and base clock, but the memory is quite a bit faster. In the end, the refreshed version is around 1% faster and a bit cooler than the "normal" 2070 mobile.

But I completely agree, it is very confusing and hard to identify exactly what gpu model each laptop model has. It requires a lot of digging into techy reviews and forums, which is far from ideal and, if not done properly, could make people buy a different chip than what they were expecting.

As far as I know, the only laptop that uses both full fat desktop spec CPU and GPU is the Alienware M51.

Not really. Even though the GPU is "replaceable", it is still a laptop version. If you check Jarrod's Tech review video and look at the chips variant code, you'll see that we're talking about a mobile GPU:
