HI,
I am considering the Voyager laptop as my next computer, I wondered if anyone has any comments with regard to this PC that may be of assistance to me please.
Sorry about the delay but have been on our Hols.
However, I suppose my main question would be with regards to the difference in processors ie. i3, i5, and i7. Main use other than surfing of course, would be photographic work and family research. this would just about cover things. I have come up with at least 2nd gen. i5 @ 2.50 ghz. at least 4gb ram and at least 500mb Hdd. Not being Too technically minded, how does this sound?
If you are serious about your photographic work, i.e. you need to edit / layer multiple RAW images from an expensive DSLR camera, then you need a good amount of RAM and some fast storage to avoid frustrating waits during editing. You have the right CPU.
I would consider something like this: -
Chassis & Display
Voyager: 17.3" AUO Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080) (£85)
Processor (CPU)
For your required usage, an i5 @ 2.50 ghz with 4gb ram and a 500GB HDD is more than enough. You can get away with an i3 also, it will just be a little slower. Here's a specification to consider:
Chassis & Display Voyager: 17.3" Glossy HD LEDWidescreen (1600 x 900) Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i5 Dual Core MobileProcessor i5-3210M (2.50GHz) 3MB Memory (RAM) 4GB SAMSUNG 1333MHz SODIMM DDR3MEMORY (2 x 2GB) Graphics Card Intel® HD Graphics 3000/4000 VideoMemory Technology up to 1.7GB Memory - Hard Disk 500GB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARDDRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm) DVD/BLU-RAY Drive 8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24xCD-RW) Memory Card Reader Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD:Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo) Thermal Paste STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENTCOOLING Sound Card Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio+ MIC/Headphone Jack Bluetooth & Wireless GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL®N130 802.11N (150Mbps) + BLUETOOTH USB Options 2 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 1 x USB 2.0 PORTAS STANDARD Battery Optimus/Voyager Series 6 CellLithium-ION Battery (48.84WH) Power Lead & Adaptor 1 x UK Power Lead & 90W ACAdaptor Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bitw/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence Office Software FREE Microsoft® Office Starter 2010(Limited functionality Word & Excel) Anti-Virus BULLGUARD INTERNET SECURITY - FREE 90DAY TRIAL Keyboard Language INTEGRATED UK KEYBOARD WITH NUMBERPAD Notebook Mouse INTEGRATED 2 BUTTON TOUCHPAD MOUSE Webcam INTEGRATED 1.3 MEGAPIXEL WEBCAM Warranty 3 Year Standard Warranty (1 MonthCollect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour) Insurance 1 Month Free Laptop Insurance inc.Accidental Damage & Theft Delivery STANDARD INSURED DELIVERY TO UKMAINLAND (MON-FRI) Build Time Standard Build - Approximately 6 to 8working days Quantity 1
That spec looks good although depending on your budget consider these few upgrades
1x4GB RAM (instead of 2x2) - Its not any faster (infact a bit slower) but will allow you to easily upgrade to 8GB in the future without having to throw away two sticks
7,200RPM HDD - This will be quite a bit faster for bootup and program loading, and if you want even quicker, get the 500GB Hybrid Drive
Dedicated graphics - This is completely up to you and probably wont speed up what your doing, but if you want to do a bit of light gaming, such as the free games offered on steam, then this is a must
Thank you guy's one and all.
All three of you have been a great help to me and I can now ( using your suggestions ) go and finally decide on my new toy. Must then call the wife a lot of lovely names and hopefully get the necessary finance that will be needed. Keep up the good work for us nerds.
