Old spec HD upgrade needed

Hey all, Not sure if this is the correct place but here goes.

Here is part of my spec. I ordered this laptop back in 2016, it's just got unbearable now the HDD is slow, a lot of noise and rewrites. I'm now looking to upgrade to an SSD keeping the HDD as storage. Is anyone else using a HDD as their main boot drive? What else would be a good upgrade to improve performance?

I'm a Ubuntu user

The laptop may have an M.2 or mSata slot you could use to add an SSD in addition to keeping the HDD for mass storage.

If you're looking at replacing the HDD altogether, the Crucial MX500 is a very safe bet. a 1TB one is ~£110 or so atm. SSD prices are very good right now.

Thank you for the response. I am considering doing this myself now but afraid I will break something.

I installed an SSD in my old lafite, from memory the process was very straightforward. Earth yourself first by touching something metal and then it was just a case of undoing the screws and if I remember rightly there was easy access, take photos as you go if you remove anything and be organised.

Thank you for the update.

I took the back off my lafite today. I was told by PCSpecialist that I have only one 1 X 7mm, 2.5" S-ATA HDD support, so I would need to remove the HDD. I think there was a misunderstanding as the image below shows a slot for the SSD am I correct? I've circled it.

I'd be grateful for your response.

I am seeking to fit the Crucial MX500 - https://amzn.to/2ZhwTeI

Your motherboard is ever so slightly different to mine, so o couldn't confirm it would definitely work. Someone with more knowledge might be able to tell you how to check. However, that is the slot. Here's mine.

That's an M2 slot all right. Not sure why they would say that. Perhaps the person you were speaking to got confused and presumed you were looking to install a 2.5" drive?

It would appear so. I just got this response today-
"Yes, if you want to have an SSD, you would need to replace your current HDD with an 7mm 2.5 inch SATA SSD."

From what I have seen, I can go ahead, make the purchase and fit this myself. It will give me the chance to downgrade to ubuntu 18.04 from 19.04 and do a fresh install too which is much needed.

I thank you all for your contributions.

Seems you're set.

You could always look up the Clevo chassis model (written on the underside of the case usually) or post it here. There's usually info on the web often in the form of manuals that list specifically what drives are supported and a diagram of the laptop's motherboard.

It's not a Clevo, from the spec in the order details "Lafité Silver Aluminium Chassis: 13.3" Matte Full HD IPS LED (1920 x 1080)"

Thank you,

Lafite is PCS's branding. Clevo are the company that make the chassis used in nearly all PCS laptops (sometimes it's Quanta and more recently Tongfang).

For instance we have an Optimus IV from 2012 that is Clevo W150ERM.

Oh right I see. Is the chassis model next to the S/N? Feel like a bit of a dummy now :)

Thanks for your assistance

Well it's not Clevo then :) And I can't find a manual online with a brief google. Though it definitely has an M.2 slot. Now you've identified the M.2 slot on your laptop you don't really need the manual, was more just in case of interest / to show what everything else on the mobo is :)
