Hi I'm looking to buy a gaming rig mostly used for strategy games ie total war in 4k if possible, I made an earlier spec though after reading through some threads think I overcooked it a bit. Would like some help on what what would be my best options thanks

If you want to play games in 4k, you'll need a 4k monitor! That monitor is 1440p 144hz.

If you're happy with 1440p 144hz, you can get that monitor elsewhere much cheaper (PCS's price is what the price used to be, but recently that model had a price cut it seems and is on sale for £600 in a lot of places).

Alternatively, there are more modern, "gsync compatible" displays, which are cheaper and have the advantage that they also let you have adaptive sync with AMD GPUs, keeping future GPU upgrade options more open.

For 4k gaming especially with demanding Total War titles, you will ideally want a 2080 ti. There are economies that can help get you there for a similar price.

PCS do sell 4k monitors but I wouldn't recommend any of them for your uses and budget.

I guess the starting point is - 4k or 1440p 144hz? :)

Thanks for the quick reply, I was hoping to keep my budget no more than £2500 thers just so many options now from the Last time I bought a computer. Could you recommend a monitor 144hz or 4k?

I was of the understanding total war games where more cpu based though that could have changed? Would I be better with an overclocked cpu?

I really just want the best rig for playing that and some other strategy games with my budget, that's all it will be used for really

Thanks

1440p 144hz vs 4k is ultimately a choice for you.

1440p 144hz is certainly the cheaper and easier option. You don't need to remortgage your internal organs to afford a GPU to run games at 1440p, so it's cheaper now, and future GPU upgrades will be cheaper. A very nice 1440p 144hz monitor is also going to be cheaper than a very nice 4k one, and there's probably more choice too.

But if you want the extra resolution of 4k, you can do it within your budget, and as you're the one who'll be playing the games, it's your call :)

Total war is less CPU dependent than it used to be

There are a few frames in it here and there, if that, between a 9700k, a 9900k, and the much cheaper R5 3600x. Especially at 1440p and 4k where you are more limited by the GPU due to the higher resolution anyway.

For 1440p gaming, a, RTX 2070 Super is plenty. You can buy a 2080 Super ofc, but a 2070 Super is over £200 cheaper and will more than do the job.

PC Specialist actually have a special offer on this system (fixed spec, discounted price):
with a 2070 Super and an AMD R7 CPU, as well as various other bits for £1600.

For 1440p 144hz monitors, there's that Asus one you already saw. Also:
Asus TUF VG27AQ (~£480)
Gigabyte AORUS AD27QD (~£530)
LG 27GL850-B (£470, if you can find one)
Acer Nitro VG271UPbmiipx (£360)

What I'm saying is, you don't have to spend all £2500 to get a great system. And indeed there might not be much benefit to doing so.

Doesn't cut off too many corners to fit a 2080 ti in.

Thanks for that, I think I'm now leaning towards a 1440 144hz monitor as the frames seem alot better and I'm coming from 1080, I take it 1440 is still a big differance from tht?

I also have an xbox x on a 65in oled so I'm not sure if the 4k will be worth it or better on a 27in monitor? Again am happy to be put right as am not clued up on this stuff.

Another question I have us the wifi cards as initially am going to have to use wifi, could you explain the difference in the best one for me.

Thanks

I found it to be so, having recently made the jump to 1440p. And I found movement to be so much smoother on a higher refresh monitor.

27" is apparently alright for 4k gaming, but 32" can let you appreciate the resolution more. And the 32" version of that monitor I linked is about £800. Also, they are both gsync only, so no adaptive sync with consoles if you chose to use your console with the monitor.

The Intel AX200 wifi card seems to offer the best blend of features vs price. If you don't know what to get, go with that.

If your home has very poor wifi signal, then look into range extenders / homeplugs.

Only other question I have is the motherboard a decent one for what i need? Dont mind paying extra for a better one if it's worth it and also the m2 ssd is the Samsung one worth the extra cash?

Thanks again for all your help really appreciate it

No worries, glad it helped :) The spec looks very nice.

Personally I'd go for the AORUS Pro motherboard, as it's better quality in terms of VRMs, and has additional features (USB 3.1 Gen 2, a bit better onboard sound).

Also note - in the M.2 SSD menu there is the WD Black NVMe SSD 1TB that is £4 cheaper than the 500gb 970 Evo Plus. It's a high end NVMe drive, near enough as fast as the 970 Evo as makes no difference, and twice the size. I'm not sure that pricing was entirely thought thought by PCS... if you're buying the PC now, buy the 1TB Black before they change their minds.

Drop the extra case fans, there are enough fans from the case and the CPU cooler. I'd go for the H100x cooler especially with an i7 as it's a much better cooler.
Also you can drop the better paste with the H100x as it comes with its own pretty decent paste.

Are you sure you want to buy the RTX 2080 Super rather than the RTX 2070 Super for 1440p gaming?

It's a valid choice if you do, but the 2070 Super is £220 cheaper and an excellent performer:
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/msi-geforce-rtx-2070-super-gaming-z-trio/15.html (2080 Super is maybe 15% better)
So don't feel like you have to get a 2080 Super if you'd rather spend a bit less. Whatever GPU you buy today, you'll end up upgrading it someday.

Thanks I've took your advice though I was curious to try the overclocke build to see if it would be worth it and also changed the case, do u think that would be better?

I'm going to give PCs a phone today to clarify if its blower 2070s or 2080s there using, if it is I'll get the gpu seperate, I saw a palit gamerock 2070 discounted to 449 on overcloclers I thought that seemed good value, theres jus so many differant variants is ther certain ones which are better?

Thanks again

I'm not sure I'd bother with pre-overclocked. it used to be about £10 more and was a no-brainer, as you got a faster PC under warranty for next to nothing.

But the price difference seems higher now - £40? *edited to correct spec

Cheapest one is usually fine. You can pay £100 for one that's a tiny little bit faster... but why would you do that when you could almost buy a cheaper 2080 Super at that price?

2070 Super Gamerock is probably one of the ones PCS use i.e. one of the less expensive Palit dual fans. That said, the Jetstream is £10 more and boosts somewhat higher out of the box.

Also NB, the AMD RX 5700 XT is on par with the 2070 Super, and is available from ~£380 in non-blower form.

Yeah I would have been happy with that one but when I called PCs today the guy on the phone wasnt really helpful, just says its whatever they have in stock and when I asked him what they had in stock just nw? I'm ready to order now if he can confirm i wont get a blower card, he jus says I'm better getting one myself to be sure not ideal really

Not ideal that he couldn't confirm. Perhaps he didn't know, or even PCS didn't know, if they were in the middle of sourcing new stock.

Though if he was upfront about buying and fitting your own to ensure you're satisfied, versus encouraging you to give PCS your money, that might be to his credit?

Let's face it, you're probably going to get a slightly faster and cheaper GPU out of buying one yourself, regardless of the blower card issue :)

Yeah a suppose it could work out better, think I'll hold of on the gpu and see if this black Friday malarky throws up any decent discounts, I'll keep my eye on the 2080s aswell.

Well I'm back again after deciding to wait to nearer black Friday before ordering for any deals on gpus and the monitor.

So in the mean time I've been reading through varies sites for more info.

Well I've decided that this ryzen build will be best for me as this cpu seems to smash the three kingdoms benchmarks for the price on 1440p. Ive looked at the higher spec ryzens with more cores etc, but for jus playing total war this one seems the best value as I wont be doing anything in the background or streaming etc. Figured I'd get the better 2080 super instead of the 2070super.
Also read that amd just now could have a better upgrade path, so that's kind of made my mind up to go and.

So questions I have,

Motherboard - is the 570 asus f gaming wl worth the extra price over the tuf board?

M2 - I've picked the new gen corsair 1tb, as I'm thinking it could really reduce turn times in total war games? Or will the much cheaper adata 1tb be better value?

Cooling - rgb h115i or rgb h100i?

Thanks

Unless you have a specific need of a feature not on the X570-PLUS, that is on the X570-F, the answer is no. I expect the answer is no :)

M2 - I've picked the new gen corsair 1tb, as I'm thinking it could really reduce turn times in total war games? Or will the much cheaper adata 1tb be better value?
I expect it would make no difference. AI processing times in games tend to be CPU bound (as the game sits there requiring a load of maths to be done about what the AI should do). Unless TW is different.

H100i - and even that is ludicrous overkill.

The Asus Strix is also really bad value. Just buy the system with no GPU and fit your own, if you're getting the Strix to avoid any chance of a blower cooler?

And ditch the extra case fans. The case and CPU cooler provide way more than enough :)

You could get the RMx PSU (850W) as it's quieter and even better quality. Though again that's not essential.

Thanks again, yeah I'm getting the gpu and monitor seperate, just selected it to show the overall build.

Regarding the motherboards are they quite similar for upgrading if need be in the future? Is there any main differences? It's the one thing I struggle to gauge and probably most important lol

The m2 drive then, I take it theres not much differance from the adata and corsair for what I need it for? ie loading games? I was thinking faster speed faster loading times in games but if its minimal in game terms between them I'd rather save th money!

I'll add the 850 psu aswell, as for the fans I seen a video of a build with that case with the extra rgb fans and cooler and really liked the look and as my case will be on my desk I thought why not lol

Overall then do you think I've went for a decent build for the price? I've took alot of convincing to go amd, but all those benchmarks dont lie a suppose, I've basically got the cpu cheaper and spent the savings on better gpu.

Thanks

The loading time difference for games will be minimal - a second here or there.

What do you mean similar for upgrading.

The X570 motherboards have PCIe 4.0, so will support upgrade options the others don't. For instance really fast PCIe 4.0 SSDs once those get rolling. GPUs with PCIe 4.0.

You can run a GPU with PCIe 4.0 on a PCIe 3.0 mobo of course (the Navi GPUs like RX 5700 are PCIe 4.0 and the run just fine on PCIe 3.0 boards). But if a future GPU starts getting bottlenecked by PCIe 3.0 x16, then the extra bandwidth would be an asset. That might not be very likely to happen any time soon, but what is more likely is that the extra bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 will let more devices run at full speed (PCIe 4.0 being double 3.0). So if a GPU sees no difference between PCIe 3.0 x16 and PCIe 4.0 x16, it can just be run at PCIe 4.0 x8, leaving 8 lanes free.

I'm not sure whether the X570 boards will support any generations of future CPU/refresh that X470 / B450 would not. If the next AMD CPU launch, some kind of Zen 2 refresh, is still compatible on AM4 motherboards, then higher end boards like the X570 plus would have improved VRMs and be happier running a high end CPU. But that's a certain amount of ifs.

If you wanted to save cash you could stick to a B450 board and pocket the change. Keep it for a future CPU and mobo upgrade once there is something meaningful to actually upgrade to in 3-4 years.

Either's a valid play tbh.

The build is good.

If going with the extra fans for more RGB, consider also an RGB strip or two.

That's me ordered finally😁

Although as you can see I've switched back to the Intel, all this reading through varies places, benchmarks was doing my head lol.

The main reason I've gone with the Intel is because I've found out most of the benchmarks are with large unit size, which is the ultra preset.
I want to play with extreme unit size and after alot of more reading , the conclusion was the i7 performs better with the added unit size as that's more cpu bound.

So I've ordered before I changed my mind again hopefully I've come to the right decision lol and agan thanks for all the help with the different
components much appreciated😊

Now just to look out for gpu and monitors deals hopefully

For gaming it's splitting hairs anyway. The 3000 series is always recommended as it's an excellent future path where as the Intel line is all but dead.

That's a seriously good build, it will serve you very well. If it's on your desk I hope you're wearing headphones though as that's going to be a wind tunnel next to you when at full chat :D
