Oussebon advice please

Bought my PC with the specs you gave me in January and had 3 months home playing and a big thank you to you. Now back at sea till July and will be travelling away for the summer so really need a gaming laptop. I really don’t want to spend over £1000. It’s 100% for low level gaming and Netflix’ing whenim away at sea with the worlds worst internet.

The Ryzen 5 cpu and the RTX 2060 combo along with the Samsung 500gb 970 make everything so fast on my desktop and playable at ultra settings so what am I looking at laptop wise?? I saw in another thread you recommended looking elsewhere for off the shelf laptops. I saw a few You tube videos for budget gaming Laptops around the 7/800 range ASUS nitro 5 was something that looked ok. Do PCS have anything in that range?

Thanks as always.

Glad to hear all is well with the desktop and you've been getting good use from it!

The other thread where I recommended looking elsewhere was strictly in the context of sub £500 laptops. And you won't be doing much gaming on a sub £500 laptop :)

PCS have plenty in the range you're looking at - though of course you're free to shop around and see what the best deals are.

We can't comment on competitor specs but when people are shopping for lower end gaming laptops, my single biggest piece of advice is to avoid the GTX 1050. Because the 1050 ti is ~35% more powerful in laptops, and is usually available for not much more cash than a 1050.

The go-to for entry-mid level gaming would be the Vyper chassis

So you could shoehorn in a GTX 1060, 500gb SSD, 16gb RAM for £1000. CPU is i5, but most games are going to care very little (a lot of laptops seem to have an i7 rather than i5, which as far as I can tell is because everyone knows "i7 best 4 gaming!" and so wallets magically open rather than any real performance difference paired with a GPU of this level...)

Depending on your gaming needs, you could save by dropping the GPU to a 1050 ti, and the RAM to 8gb.

Taking the price to just under £800:

Yup, always remember, you should get the pure value of from purchase. The 1050 ti may cost a bit more, but it will definitely do more than the 1050.

48 days left at sea and very much gearing up for the laptop purchase, quick question 17 inch or 15.6 ?? I’m probably going for the 1st option you suggested but just seeing if any thing has changed in the last month.

At the £1000 mark the Vyper is your only choice for something at the performance level of a GTX 1060, and it only comes in 15.6".

The Optimus IX 17.3" with a similar spec is aboout £1000 more:
It has a 17.3" screen (obviously...) but the screen is also 144hz and probably has better colours given the higher NTSC values.

It's possible both chassis are going EOL. PCS is already selling the Optimus X which has the refreshed CPUs, and as they only offer the i7 version (for now?) these are significantly more expensive. Furthermore, the GTX 1050 ti / GTX 1060 are being phased due to their successors the 1650 and 1660 respectively being available.

So there's a possibility that by the time you're back on dry land, the options of what's available to buy may have changed. A worst-case scenario is that there's a bit of a void in the space that used to be occupied by the Vyper, leaving you buying more expensive alternatives, or buying from another store (assuming another store is in any better position in the budget range).

As always your a legend, purchase date fingers crossed will be beginning of July, with instructions to wifey not to open the box “so it’s a surprise for me” / hide the invoice. Whatever it’ll be I’ll get it from PCS I like the company. Will post again around that time for your advice.

If there's a gap between it and you arriving, I'd suggest having it tested in your absence quite thoroughly to make sure that if there are any issues you can still make use of the returns window.

Obviously there's a warranty and PCS honour their warranties. But always best to have the option for returning for a refund :)

I fly home July 26th, but fly out to Seattle for a month July 29th (enough time to empty Greggs and drink far too much Irn bru) wife and daughter currently sailing onboard with me, but fly home July 7th....... so...... my plan was order it around the time they get home so I can take it with me. So need the oussebon updated best purchase around the 6th.

Yes. You can't get the Vyper with a GTX 1060 any more (since that's going EOL).

The first website selling laptops I looked at I saw a laptop with an i7 CPU, GTX 1060, and 120hz screen for less than £1000. While we can't recommend competitors' specs, I think you should shop around given PCS's offerings at this budget range right now.

I hope we see a refreshed Vyper or successor for the same budget range, but right now there isn't something I'd be happy recommending.

You could always call them (they're open to 8pm today and also open part of tomorrow) and ask if they are likely to have a refresh of the Vyper or similar, budget-friendly option sub £1000.

The frontline staff may not know, and plans can always change, but could be worth a call to ask.

Oussebon, how do these guys not know who you are??? You make them a killing?? Said exactly what you wrote he’s off to find the manager

Ok so managers says there’s something in the pipeline for the vyper but the guy on the telephone wasn’t allowed to disclose anything date wise I’m hoping before the 26th July, he said just keep checking the website it’ll be “soon”

That's pretty cool, more info than I was expecting tbh. Hope it pans out. See how it goes over the next 3 weeks I guess.

I'd suggest you begin searching other sites for options though. PCS refreshing the Vyper is (at a guess) because it's EOL and being replaced by newer models. This means options from other vendors will likely be shrinking as well.

If PCS's option doesn't materialise in time for you, you'll want to make sure you have fallback options. And keep an eye on them so they don't all vanish too!

Hopefully PCS will offer something good in this range, but one should never gamble on these things.

Also check PCS's Review page: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/reviews/ which is where you can find a lot of preset, discounted configurations. Even if they don't do a new Vyper they could always do another chassis discounted to within your price range.

Oussebon, I know you can’t recommend anything from another company but I’ve seen something on another website after reading reviews let’s just say it rhymes with “smacer readator” it’s coming in at £1199 with a £200 coupon so was £1399.

The specs I can’t seem to match on PCS I would rather get something from PCS CAUSE I like the company, can you suggest anything?? I’ll maybe phone up PCS and say what have you got to match it???

I called up today and basically what they were offering to match the specs was a recoil Gtx 3. Which way should I go now the budget is £1200
