P775DM3-G RAM compatibility question.

Hi,

I am looking for ram compatabilty advice. I have an Octane Clevo laptop model P775DM3-G purchased in 2016, with:
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-6700k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache
16GB HyperX IMPACT 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 16GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 - 8.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1, G-SYNC

I would like to increase the RAM to the max (64GB). The Spec (on the invoice) says: Supports DDR4 2133MHz
Is faster also supported (or is this the max speed)?

I understand that I need to match memory. Can I match in pairs or do all four need to match? Does brand (or anything else) also need to be matched?

One website says the best option is 'PC4-21300 DDR4 2666MHz 260pin SODIMM memory.'

Please can someone say what my best options are if I keep the current stick, and what I would gain if I get four new ones.
(eg Would it work to get two 2666MHz and one 2400MHz?)

Can I purchase this from PC Specialist?

Thanks,

Rob.

Yes, RAM is not on the list.
It's dual channel memory, so you need to have matched pairs, no need for matched quads.

It's generally best to get the same model of ram for both sets to avoid conflicts and boot issues.

What is it that requires that much RAM just out of interest?

Unreal 5.0 development recommends 32GB. I thought I may as well fit 64GB because I can:) Maybe I will try implementing a RAM disc, also Firefox will probably eat it on its own.

Might be worth running the Crucial System Scanner as it gives detailed information on what RAM you have and what is compatible...whilst it only lists Crucial RAM as upgrades, you can take the information and buy another brand. The Scanner is a program which scans your RAM:

You will end up with something like this:

Good point, I will try that later. Currently I am running Linux and building Unreal, which will take a few hours to finish, the scanner is a Microsoft OS tool.

Sometimes you get lucky and you could get away with buying another 3 x 16gb sticks.

Definitely worth a try , if they play nice then great and if they don't then buy another stick.

As far as I can work out there is no point in going faster than I already have (2400MHz RAM),
as the CPU already limits the RAM to 2133MHz.
Could upgrade the CPU to a i7-6700k, this supports 2400MHz,
and I think that is the fastest CPU that the laptop will take (@£339 no).

I though I had a fast laptop, but now I have found out that the i7-6700k is too slow for Microsoft 11!
That really is bloatware, I will be sticking to Linux even more.

It's not the CPU that's not compatible for Windows 11 particularly, it's I'm running Windows 11 fine on a 4th gen i7, runs faster than windows 10.

Microsoft put in rediculous hardware requirements as that will be more important when windows 10 goes end of life and ttmhey disable passwords online. It will be biometrics and only newer gens support this.
